Are the motion controls the real draw for the Wii?

Mostly no. 16 20.51%

No, totally. 6 7.69%

Are motion controls the main draw of the Wii? Thats a crazy thing to ask right? However I was thinking about how little most of the main library actually seems need the motion controls and how many of the future Nintendo games listed at E3 with the major exception of the Metroid and Zelda games don't seem to rely on the actual motion capabilities or such capability could be replaced by a standard controller.

To me it seems that Nintendo's (simplified) thought process went something like this:

  1. Make console accessible.
  2. Introduce simpler pointer control scheme and controller with a more straightforward graphical user interface.
  3. Use motion controls to augment the simplified controller layout.

It seems that the actual Wiimote and console design along with games are there to get the average person over the barrier of unfamiliarity and entice them to try the console out. I think the actual motion controls don't really make a 'great' interface going from the standards of your jack of all trades console controller. They simply make it an accessible one.

Well, motion controls is what got everyone initially excited, so yes.

The simplicity just ended up coming along with it.

That and price: yes

I'll make it simple:

For the "casuals": Yes.
For the "hardcore": It's all about Nintendo's characters and constant product quality.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

The real draw is accessible fun.   Motion controls help facilitate that but as the success of NSMB shows, it isn't a strict necessity.  That accessibility sells Wii to women, children, former gamers and older folks.  People the HD consoles had never even thought of trying to sell to.     Also Wii Fit introduced an entirely new genre of 'games' that's helped Wii sales immensely too.

I love my classic controller, that way I can play RPGs in a normal way.

It's not a draw to the console, as long as they include a standard controller in the box (oh wait, they don't). :(

In part. It's an attitude that made the Wii succeed, proven by motion-optional (Mario Kart Wii) or motion-light (NSMBWii) games that really drove the Wii.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Not tottaly. If it only was that , people would be escited by Move, and I don't see many that way.

Above: still the best game of the year.

Like Gamerace said, it's about accessibility. The simplistic layout of the Wii remote, the few buttons, and the motion control all help reach more consumers through accessibility. That's also the (probably #1) thing that Apple focuses on. User interface and accessibility.

Motion controls most definitely play a huge role in that.

Like what other posters have already said, the draw is motion controls, price and accessibility.

After that however, it is all about the games.  I have found several games on the Wii that I really had fun with such as the Trama Center games.
