This is something I will definitely not be getting. Besides, what's the point when the 3DS can take 3D pictures, and it will probably cost much less than the cameras.

The 3DS camera quality will probably be like the DSi's, which isn't great if it's something you're taking for vacation.

I agree that it would be awkward not having any way to see the 3D other than your (3D) TV set, though.

It sounds like you don't have to physically move the camera; the lens physically adjusts to accomodate multiple viewing angles within the same frame of reference, but from a fixed point of perspective.

For those who aren't clear on what that means, think of "bullet time" photography in reverse. Instead of taking multiple shots of a single frame of reference from multiple reference points in sequence, the camera shoots multiple shots from a single reference point (you don't move the camera physically) from one viewing angle, just as normal vision would.

The upside is, you can "turn" an image shot in this fashion on any 2D display. In other words, your single frame of reference has in effect multiple viewing angles. I've seen QT VR files that simulate the same effect.

That data should be enough to produce a 3D image when viewed on a 3D display.

One eyed dudes don't see 3D... and normal vision has 2 origin points

put one hand over one of your eyes. now tell me you can't see depth because I can. let me explain why. I can tell when one object ends and when one object starts. from this my brain can calculate the size of the object. from this object I can then calculate the distance of all other objects based on the size. other features like light, also play apart. also when I move my head (like this camera) I see the object form different angles. yeah sure with one eye closed it is slightly harder to tell how far an object is compared to when I have both eyes, but to say that with one eye you can't see depth just isn't true.

well I suppose they wouldn't be able to see a 3d image of screen but all other things I am sure they can.

being used to object sizes and identifying depth from this is not seeing depth... try putting a patch on your eye for a few days then go play catch a ball with a random sized ball... you'll see that you will most often than not catch it with your noze.

Do you think the camera knows the size of the objects in order to calculate their depth? nope, thus it can't calculate depth or distances...

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

One eye can't use sterescopic offset to determine depth. So a one-eyed individual can only approximate depth perception by judging relative size of objects in relation to the viewer, horizon lines and architectural or environmental lines (corners, tiles, any sort of details that diminish the further away they are from the viewer).

But the description of the Sony camera doesn't sound like it "sees" the way a single human eye would. For starters, the lens physically moves "...will be able to capture both 3D and 2D images using a single lens using a sweeping motion" whereas the human eye only pivots/rotates. So once again, it does this from one viewing angle, just like a human, without having to physically move the camera for a perspective shift, or have a second lens to provide that perspective offset from one axis.

One eyed people have more than just one mechanism to perceive depth.

For example movement, of the eye, or the head or the full body, this gives different views of the scene, although not two at a time like with two eyes, but along time (just like those simplified 3D cameras do).

Movements of objects on the scene can give analogous infos.

Maybe one eyed people have a bigger limit in their sight field lateral width, in fact Renaissance Lord Federico from Montefeltro, after losing an eye, had the top of his nose removed by a surgeon to widen the remaining eye's field and avoid being more vulnerable in battle.

Sorry, my bad...

Its hard sometimes to read everything posted when people here go on crazy 3D speculation rampage.

And thinking again about it, why all that fuss? We already live in 3D, it's 2D that's different!

...OMG, then the old stuff will disrupt the new one!!!
