Forums - Gaming Discussion - Trophies and achievements - how do you like them?

I was thinking that different games use different trophy models. Just as some examples:

1. The do-wacky stuff type of trophies: Getting rewarded for doing five consecutive flips with a car in GTAIV would fall here. As well as the kill three helghan in a row with headshots with the pistol in KZ2.

My verdict: I hate them

2. The grind and grind trophies: Getting 50 kills with a gun in U2. Or the 10,000 kills in Resistance 2!

My verdict: I like them, as long as they are reasonable

3. The story trophies: Complete a level - trophy. Seen this work in LBP and games like Terminator Salvation.

My verdict: My favourite!

4. The online trophies: KZ2 had quite a few, GTAIV had some tough ones to achieve. As well as most other games out there really.

My verdict: OK as long as reasonable.

5. The need-to-own-peripherals trophies: Grab a PS Eye for Buzz! Quiz World or any other additional purchase.

My verdict: Completely unbearable.

What's your take on this? And which model should games use to reward players with trophies or achievement points?

One of the best things to ever happen to gaming IMO

Thanks to Blizzard and WoW for introducing them to us!!

I personally don't like them.  Like in wow you have all these little things to do for achievements and all you get is...achievment points...they have no use but to show off to people.  It ends up feeling like all of your effort was useless when it's just a virtual bragging game and they're an example of video games going moving from art/entertainment into addiction based profiteering.

I like them because it gives me something to shoot for. Like the kills in U2 with a specific weapon, is pretty cool and adds replay value to the game. Although with some games, I'd do the task even if I wasn't rewarded with a trophy. For example, if anybody has played SFIV, one of the trophies is to the all the trials for every character and as hard as that is, I would do it even without a trophy.

I like achievements and trophies when they're reasonable.

I don't think online achievements are reasonable, but that's because I'm often late to the party (when a game's online community has already died) or just completely outclassed by other players. Damn you, players of superior skill!

I generally like them because I feel like they're (usually) a decent gauge of how thoroughly I've played a game, and they let me compare my progress to my friends'.

They are great bragging rights and that is the best thing ever

I hate online trophies. For example, now I will never be able to gather 100% trophies in LotR: Conquest :(

I'm pretty sure it was Insomniac who introduced Achievements/Trophies, I remember collecting them in Timesplitters 2 on the ps2.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Never played it so wouldn't know.

I always thought it was WoW that introduced them, along with the points for each and a total Ach score and stuff.
