IGN Ratings for Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (DS)
Rating Description
out of 10 Click here for ratings guide
7.0 Presentation
Great localization, though a little heavy on the alliteration. It's a shame that the heroes of your party don't develop emotionally as the story unfolds.
8.0 Graphics
Character models are cute and items change their physical appearance (which is quite remarkable), but environments are mostly unoriginal.
7.0 Sound
No voice acting. Music is adequate, though there's a lot of repetition to be found. Towns with completely different styles will have the same "town theme," which can be annoying.
7.5 Gameplay
Somewhat bland battle system. Fortunately the slick multiplayer interface makes Dragon Quest IX a rewarding RPG.
8.5 Lasting Appeal
Alchemy and side quests will keep you playing for a long, long time.
8.0
OVERALL

I own all of lastgen systems as of October 2008. (Finally got a Dreamcast)

I own every currentgen system except PS3.

Good score!

I can't wait for this game!

I read it, and it's just another "Too traditional! Waaaaaaah!" review.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

I kind of expected it though but I was hoping for more.

But his review is dumb. "Bland battle system", that's what Dragon Quest is all about and that's why I love it so much.

Funny that people always post IGN scores.

I'm just worried about the part where they say that the main focus of this game for the first time is multiplayer.

I don't really know anyone who's buying this. Is this feature over the internet too? If not, am I going to play only half a game?

I have a problem with both that and saying "As I traveled through the world of Dragon Quest IX, I felt like I was working my way down the JRPG checklist. Grassy field? Check. Forest? Check. Desert town? Check. This is all too familiar to fans of the genre."

By that argument, no matter what the game did, it would've been "too familiar" and for the record, I can't remember the last JRPG I played that had a desert town in it.

WKC, another game from Level 5, had a desert town lol

But I love desert town!!

And again that's what I like about Dragon Quest (Everything is classic and familiar and stereotyped).

I'm curious about how the multiplayer works. I really have no idea.

I don't think the reviewer was a fan of the series to begin with.

Why is everybody complaining for an 8? Its a tipycal JRPG, an those rarely get amazing review scores in the west. By getting an 8 from IGN it prooves that its probably a great JRPG

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

While I haven't played the game yet I can't help thinking that the 8.5 for lasting appeal is too low, due to all the quests, alchemy, multiplayer and the like
