Forums - Sales Discussion - Samsung crushes Sony. Look at the numbers.

Wahahaha, how people can divert the truth with simply comparing 2 different figures from 2 different reports that nobody will going to read anyway, I admit Samsung is bigger than Sony in their home electrical appliances department as well as handphone department, but it makes me laugh to compare Samsung to Sony as a whole, cause:

- Sony Music is the second LARGEST global music company after it bought off BMG with big names like MJ, Britney, Whitney, Celine Dione and Jay Chow in Asia. MJ alone generated 1 billion last year after his death with his records selling off the roofs globally (maybe only Madonna can repeat the deed, but she has to be dead first, hehe)

- Sony Pictures is as huge with mega blockbusters like Spiderman series, and mega movies like 2012 and MJ This is It; even the latest Karate kid made $154 millions globally to date from a mere budget of $40 millions, not including DVD and Blu-ray sales

- SCE has so many studios under its belt: Japan Studio, Media Molecule, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Santa Monica, to name a few. Sony has the largest number of high quality first party game studios in the big 3, although not as profitable as Nintendo (Pokemon Studio overkill any of the Studio mentioned before).

Samsung maybe more profitable than Sony due to its success in home appliances and handphones, with its more competitiveness price providing comparative quality (my HDTV is a Samsung), but no way it would be bigger than Sony. Even a die hard Xbot must have watch one or 2 Spiderman movie before, or also a fan of Brit Brit.

Meh, my experience with Samsung's plasmas haven't been all that great. Fantastic screen's, but the speaker's are absolute shit, within a month they were busted and then the repair service was just horrible and now it's stuffed up again. I'm picking up a 50 inch Razor frame LG plasma tomorrow, I've never had a problem with LG and Sony tv's (32 inch Bravia in my brother's room).

The only reason I bought the Samsung in the first place was because of how much cheaper it was, which is fine and dandy until the thing breaks. I'll repeat that the quality of the screen's are pretty amazing though, never had a screen burn, no fading, just crystal clean quality for the last three year's.

I have one samsung tv, to me it's the opposite. The screen is not as good as my other Toshiba, but the sound is great.

But it's a good tv nonetheless.

Being bigger is not necessarily better. When companies get too big, they tend to lose focus.  Sometimes it's better to be a bit smaller and more nimble. Rather than making a bazillion products, it's easier to focus and a few and do it right.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

makes sense.

They manufacture so many phones and their prices are really cheap for a brand name company

Sucker Punch is 3rd party.

Also, while Sony has the most studios (barely I might add, just one more than Nintendo), Nintendo actually has a similar amount of staff within it's studios (EAD is HUGE, with near 800 people and 6 sub-divisions, bigger than Sony's largest 2 studios put together).  They're about the same size overall, while Microsoft employs probably about half as many people at it's game development studios (though Microsoft's been expanding rapidly in recent years).

I never realized how big Samsung got over the years. This is insane.

Check there forecast for their next Q2.

Operating Income: 3.1 - 3.4 billion Euro (4.8 - 5.2 trillion Won / 3.9 - 4.27 billion USD)
Revenue: about 28 billion Euro (37 trillion Won / 37.12 billion USD)

Remember, this is just one QUARTER!

Sony reported a 270 million Euro profit for the past YEAR!

Those are some pretty big numbers, aren't they?

They really passed Sony. Not in a small way, they aren't neck to neck.

Doesn't surprise me.  Their HDTV's crushes Sony's - in price/value and on average between models, in quality.

So am I the only one who really likes Sony's products.

I have a 40" Sony HDTV which is just great, I have had Sony phones for ages which have all been great, particularly my latest, the X10. I am just about to order my 2nd Sony computer, and it is much better value than any other PCs of similar power, even if the battery sucks.... I have also had Sony cameras, which again have been just great (and quite a few other random items). Oh.. and they make the 4th greatest thing ever, the PlayStation (1, sliced bread, 2, TV, 3, Sky)

In short, Sony make great electronics and I don't really care about their market value, so long as they keep making these great products I will be happy

Someone needs to edit that OP - It's a failure.

You are comparing quarterly REVENUE with yearly PROFIT.

Are you in primary school?

I dont see anything wrong with his comparison. He is just showing the scale of Samsungs success and comparing one quarter of theirs to Sonys full year...

No. There is a big difference between revenue and profit you know.

You can't possibly make ANY conclusions from this data until

a) You know Samsungs margins

b) The full Samsung 2010 report is out.
