I guess Sony aren't doing as well as they used to. Wasn't there a time when they were the biggest consumer electronics manufacturer in the world?

Well they used to dominate the portable music market, losing that to Apple.

They used to do very well in TVs, now Samsung is eating their lunch on that one. Damn, Sony even buys many of its LCD panels from Samsung.

Their phones used to do well, now Sony Ericsson has crappy market share.

They used to dominate gaming, Nintendo stole that and Microsoft compounded the damage further.

They lost domination of all the important markets. The only big thing they may be doing well is maybe the movie market (I don't know much about that one).

Second biggest.  Matsushita (Panasonic) was first because their products were cheaper while not quite as good as SONY's.  SONY was never first.  Where things stand now in the grand scheme of things, I'm not sure.

Well earned by Samsung. The last 3 products I have had that were made by Sony were duds.

DVD player - the most sensitive to minor scratches and smudges of any DVD player we ever had.

DVD carousel - Slow and had the worst interface to enter in the titles of the DVDs had an onscreen keyboard without a back button. You could plug in a keyboard but the chip that managed it was so slow using the keyboard was horrendous. We ended up keeping a notebook to keep track of which slot a DVD was in. Finally had a setting to automaticlly play the last DVD that was played.  Settings allowed you to disble that setting, but the setting was ignored.

Laptop the heat would warp the door on the bottom and allow the memory chips to loosen and stop making contact.  Nothing worse then in a middle of a presentation all of a sudden you have 1/2 the memory you thought you had.

Samsung all the way.  I will be getting a LED TV soon and Samsung it will be.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Samsung is also one of the main contractors for a little thing called the iPhone

Hide your kids, hide your wife

Samsung are steaming ahead, but it's nothing to do with them having superior products (which I would say is false anyway, but to each his own), it is for a number of reasons:

  • Sony missed the boat on TV's a while ago. Sony buy their panels from Samsung in many cases.
  • Japanese companies were far worse hit by the recession.
  • Sony was even worse hit by the recession as it is a more high market brand.
  • Sony have had such strong competitions in their key areas.

And in the OP, please tell me operating income and net profit are not being compared? Lol.

Anyway, Sony still have:

  • At least an equal amount of resources
  • At least an equal amount of partners and influence
  • More assets

So it's far from doom and gloom.

What Sony need is to dominate a market once again. 3D is what they are gunning for.

But compare Sonys numbers to Panasonics as well.

This is more to do with Samsung getting huge than Sony getting small.

I guess all is not well in Sony land! Thanks for taking the time.
