I'm going to say you need to play the first before the second! You must.

Lol, why? I was more thinking that he is getting into RPG's so ME2 would be much easier, and if he likes that get into ME1 after that.

And story wise it really isn't needed to play the first at all.

Going back and playing the first one after playing the second is t aking a huge step bckward in terms of enjoyment.

Also, the first one is still legitimately great, and makes the second one a lot more fun when the choices you make are reflected in the game world.

I mean, the defaults in ME2 without an imported character are all terrible.

Play ME1 before you play ME2. 

ME1 has many elements I prefer over ME2, but as khuutra said the 2nd improves in shooter/combat mechanics. At the same time though, ME2 loses some things I liked in ME1 such as more open environments and some micromanagement. Changing armour, guns, ammo types, etc was fun in ME1. It's a bit of a trade off, and there are some problems with each game, but I honestly prefer the first over the second. 

Also download Alien Swarm on steam. It's a fun, free co-op arcadey shooter from valve.
