Forums - Gaming Discussion - Would the console war improve if....

all the consoles sold within 10K of each other weekly?

If the comprtitiveness improved drastically, how would gaming change? How would forums change? How would fanboys change?

People would just hype up the 10k difference.  The fanboy wars are far from logical so the battles will be fought over extra controller sales or some crap.  Fanboys will find something to fuel the war.

Wouldn't really make a difference lol

You would have fanboys saying 10K is a big difference and is selling more than B Console and B fanboys would retaliate with something else and A fanboy would retaliate back

ITS A VICIOUS CYCLE!!

PSN: HienTran2691

XBL: IVietCong

It wouldn't make a difference. Fanboyism is a lot about cognitive dissonance. A popular example of cognitive dissonance is when there are two very similar products A and B you can buy. You have to decide on one, but they are so similar that there is no clear winner - so in the end you'll be picking one, but since there was no clear winner there remains an uncomfortable feeling in your that you might have made the wrong decision.

People will try to eliminate this uncomfortable feeling afterwards by trying to find reasons that seem to justify the decision they made. If someone decided to buy product A, he will be interested in all information that seems to make product A the better decision, while he will try to avoid or downplay any information that seems to make product B the better decision.

This for example explains...

a) why fanboyism is mostly between PS3 and Xbox 360 (these consoles are in fact very similar, while the Wii is significantly different)

b) why fanboys usually only have a 360 OR a PS3

These people are saying the term "fanboy". I demand they be banned for it like I was.

Damn sackfans.

What's the problem with the term "fanboy"? You just used it as well. I see a huge difference between general talk about "fanboyism" and actually calling a specific person a "fanboy" (which I consider a valid reason for getting banned, because that can be considered an insult to that person).

I don't know what exactly happened to you, but my feeling tells me that you got banned for the latter and still don't want to understand what you did wrong.

That's why I like the Japan sales, you often seen either Wii/PSP/DS/PS3 selling the most each week

However, 'ignorant blinded fans' (is that a better phrase than 'fanboy'?)  would just make the 10k difference seem like a massive deal, like when in it's first couple of weeks NMH PS3/360 sold marginally more than the Wii version and the Anti-Wii brigade were chanting how it illustrates how the wii fails at 3rd party software.  That's the only example that comes to mind.

Not going to happen as each console maker has a different business strategy, different view of the market, and different philosophies concerning whethe it is the games or technology that drives them.

Sony under Kaz Hirai made the move to put out the most cutting edge, expensive console of this generation. From 2006 until 2009, the price of the PS3 was $499 and $599. Consequently, their sales have suffered in comparison to the smashing success of the PS2. Sony proves that gamers buy systems for the games, not for the technology.

Microsoft is a harder read than either Sony or Nintendo because they have only been in the market for two generations. The 360 in many ways is the common man's PS3 where you get many of the same blockbuster games, 360 exclusives, and a company who is keen on learning from the success of Nintendo with Kinect.

Nintendo has pushed the philosophy of disruptive technologies and the blue ocean business strategy to the extent where Nintendo is referred to by many misinformed, over opinionated gamers as the "casual" console. Casual or not, Nintendo's hardware and software numbers alone speak for themselves and will allow Nintendo to dictate the industry for years to come.

The time for being within 10k consoles was when the first consoles first launched. Since the difference in total hardware and total software numbers has been cemented by 5 years, neither will be fighting for the top spot currently held by Nintendo.

Also, hardware sales after the release of the 8th generation consoles is a very, very moot point because the console makers are focused on the new console.

As far as I recall, the console wars have to do with sales only on this site. Rest of the gaming world doesn't give a toss about how much each console sold.

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

Things would be even more heated.

Everyone would claim that their console was going to "win".
