Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony and Activision over UK tax breaks

When a country has 1 Trillion £ debt, (no exaggeration needed) they can't aford to be giving tax breaks...

In these hard times this is fine, providing the tax breaks provided to the film industry are also scrapped.

So, here we go, corporatism at its finest:

* The industry is cutting headcount left and right.  And now, it wants companies to slash tax rates so that they increase profits, or they threaten to go elsewhere.  The idea is to get companies to go into bidding wars to slash taxes.  Nevermind that an area provides other benefits, just keep demanding less taxes.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Trust Activision to have a tantrum because it isnt getting its own way

It's not about making a profit though, sure there are some companies that don't but then the industry is hard but gaming is by far our most successful (both sales and export) entertainment industry in the UK. It makes far more money then music or film.

If someone doesn't keep it going, like say the government, it will end up like the film industry for sure, our so very wealth film industry.

Good. If it's not profitable then it should not survive. Not even throiugh a recession; companies with sound business models don't go bankrupt in a recession. If it IS profitable then it does not require my tax money's support.

I wouldn't want film or music or any other industry to be subsidised either.

My problem is that all three parties promised this pre-election and now it is not coming. The other issue is that these are being cut, but the British film industry is still being subsidised. There is a good article on Eurogamer, explaining the financial benefits of these tax incentives, and the arguement presented makes perfect sense to me

Video games are massive contributer to the UK, by giving tax breaks it would allow the industry to grow more, thus contribute more which would help even more.

However it seems they now don't want it to grow, which is stupid.

Especially stupid as they want to build the economy on exporting, something the games industry does a lot of

Have none of you heard of a free market? Where companies are responsible for taking their own losses as well as profits? The government's job isn't to help businesses that can't make money. If a business wants to expand, it gets loans, raises capital via shares/investors. Sony and Activision have more than enough income to invest that capital themselves if they believe they can expand here.

If I want a corporation to suceed, I buy its products. If I don't, it doesnn't get any. I don't want my government to spend my money on it anyway.

That shouldn't happen either.

The reason it is politically acceptable to do that and not for video games is that politicians are mostly 40 and don't think games form part of culture as film does.

So do you see cultural subsidization as being more tolerable/justifiable than corporate subsidization?

That is what annoys me the most. This is just the government relegating games for cultural reasons, not financial reasons
