Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Splinter Cell Conviction dumbed down or is it just different?

I haven't played the game.... well not yet that is. I was a big fan of the first Splinter Cell and Chaos Theory, I never liked any of UbiSoft Shanghai's Splinter Cell titles. Now this latest installment of the series is developed by UbiSoft Montreal, but with a new lead game designer and creative director. It has turned off a lot of die-hard Splinter Cell fans with it's mix of stealth and shooting oriented gameplay. I have to admit, I was turned off by it too. Many die-hard Splinter Cell fans have claimed that it's dumbed down, while others have defended it by claiming that it's just more accessible and different.

I might give it a chance though, so should I rent it or buy it? Is it a bad game that I should skip?

No comments after an hour, that makes me a sad panda. :(

The answer is "yes".  It's dumbed down AND it's different.  It was fun but it certainly didn't feel like Splinter Cell to me.  Plus, the graphics were actually kinda dated.  Splinter Cell games in the past were always known for pushing the graphical envelope.

I bought it and I think it was worth the money (I'd give it an 8/10) but the game is actually pretty short.  I didn't give the two player mode a shot yet, though.  Anyway, if renting it is an option, I think you'd be better off renting it.  It definitely deserves to be played but it may not get replayed very often.

I've not played a single Ubisoft game that I've liked this gen. It's sad that my favorite dev of last gen is now my most hated.

Double Agent and Assassin's Creed were far from terrible, I guess they didn't live up to your expectations. As for Far Cry 2? Well, thats a "love it and hate it" sort of game.

Dumbed down, made me feel like an idiot playing it. I'd like to control everything. Not just a few things.

PC version looks alright, don't know how it plays yet, and no idea why those mother fuckers can't do WINDOWED MODE! I don't like running fucking dxwnd you shitty ass console centric mother fuckers this gen! I got that all Splinter Cell pack off steam a few weeks ago at a discount, still haven't really played it beside the first few minutes and quitting out, I'd be really pissed if I loose internet when I play it though, better not happen. fucking Unreal Engine 3, such a shit engine on PC now, I blame it on consoles. ok /rant off.

PS: THQ is the same god damned way, it's like their programmers don't know wtf windowed mode is sometimes, but THQ studios are generally known to be shitty coders on PC sigh....

Well that's a shallow viewpoint towards the game, I doubt you would've made a decent review for Far Cry 2. The game had other merits of it's own and it's flaws. The merits being the exceptional audio design and musical score, with a well realized African enviroment that looks hauntingly realistic. The variety of weapons, tools, and openess allows players to play each missions with infinite amount of tactical options. The gunplay feels powerful, weapons have a raw and brutal feel to them. The flaws being the repition of the mission structure, similiar to that of Assassin's Creed. The guard posts are scattered around everywhere, and it doesn't help that they respawn a few seconds after you leave them. The storyline is quite well written, poorly told as it takes a backseat throughout most of the game.

I could go on and on about it's flaws and merits, but the best way to describe Far Cry 2: It's a mixed bag.
