Forums - Microsoft Discussion - MS: Hardcore will buy Kinect first!

No, just no. I consider myself a Hardcore gamer and I have a 360, but everything I saw of Kinect definitly targeted casuals.

Of course there was the Forza Kinect demo shown at the MS pressconference but... do you really need this? And the Star Wars game... well... didn't look very promising to me.

Good interview anyway.

Game - Metro Last Light

TV - Deadwood

Music - Forest Swords

Nice interview, but I really don't get his comment on the hardcore.  Right now, assuming I'm thinking the same hardcore he is, I just don't see anything to interest them apart from some funky interface capabilities, which when you remove the future tech factor, don't actually add anything - whether you call a command or press a button you're getting the same result.

Without some real games driven need for Kinect for the 360 hardcore I just don't see why - apart from brand loyalty - they'd want to buy Kinect (unless it was cheap enough to be 'why not' which doesn't seem like a foregone conclusion yet).

The whole drive for Kinect, based on E3 and surrounding comments (this was excluded), seems clearly focused on everyone but the hardcore.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

To my mind Early adopters are core it is just the way of things. Some are more core than others but I am pretty sure Casual early adopters are in the minority whereas Core early adopters are in the ascendancy.

Kinect as seen by PS3 owners ...if you can pick at it   ...post it ... Did I mention the 360 was black and Shinny? Keeping Sigs obscure since 2007, Passed by the Sig police 5July10.

"We were quite surprised to see so much Kinect at the MS E3 conference. Are you confident hardcore gamers will adopt it?"

"Yeah. I think we know that hardcore gamers will be the first to go out and buy it, as they are with any product. So we know we have to have a wide range of experiences, from things like the animals game you saw today to... to... games that are more geared towards the core."

Am I the only one who laughed during that part?  He couldn't come up with a single Core game example.

Yeah that was very telling that he couldn't even name single title as example ;)

It was so obvious that he couldn't even name one single title as an example xD

Perhaps he knows something that we as casual viewers do not. Based on the games presented at the conference I would say I find it hard to imagine hardcore or even core gamers buying the product for their own use. Not to mention why they would want to make their happy box a social experience for the entire family. I sincerely hope that Microsoft isn't making the mistake of confusing their demographics for one another. I am afraid they may already be softening their definitions, and they may want to generalize their experience, and as anyone knows from the Wii that lends itself to a mediocre experience. You can't make games that everyone enjoys equally, because the established gamer is far more competitive, and wants a deeper experience.

Somehow I find it counterintuitive that Microsoft would make a mistake that Nintendo wouldn't even make. After all Nintendo didn't release the Wii without a few core/hardcore titles. They even had a handful of mature titles less then half a dozen months after launch. Hell in this case they don't even need to fully support Kinect they could just implement voice recognition into their games. I will be kind of shocked if Halo Reach doesn't support some modest use of these features. After all how hard could it be. How hard would it be to implement retroactive patches to dozens of games just for added functionality. That is a question for another thread though.

This may be a morbid thought, but I wonder if you can strangle them.  Or kill them.  Or don't feed them.  You know, kinda like those old Tamagochi pet things that you could take care of but still neglect or kill off if you wanted to.

Yes good interview although it makes sense that the core gamers would give Kinect a try first since they would be the first ones to know about it and are usually the ones to adapt new tech first.

... except it was the core gamer that screamed bloody murder with motion controls and that if gaming was going to go in this direction they would leave gaming forever.... though I personally agree with you what they are going to do. That doesn't really change what claims were made 4 years ago.
