Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony decides to combat 3DS with... PSP-4000?

It Does not Matter What Sony Does, it Could Be ten times Better then the 3DS have Better games and a cheaper Price and Ninty Fans Would still Scream DOOMED.

Starting to sound like Sony Fans during the early PS2 days/Pre PSP days.

A: Sony Shows PSP2 = DOOMED

B: Sony shows PSP4000 = DOOMED

C: Rumors = DOOMED

D: Sony Waits And Tops Nintendo = ??? DOOMED ???

Z: anything sony Doomed = Doomed

Sony's handheld efforts are doomed unless they pull something out of a hat. However they are dedicating their hat only to the PS3 at this point. The chances of the PSP2 being 10x better than the 3DS are miniscule, not worth talking about really.  Don't forget they are the third place handheld maker coming up against two opponents with significantly more momentum. The DS pwned the PSP without the early third party support and now they will have little chance against a 3DS with all the expectation of being the successor to the first place handheld of the previous handheld generation.

Tease.

This could benefit in Sony's favor by quite a bit.

The 3DS is expected to be at a high price, and if Sony is only coming out with a PSP 4000 then there is more then likely going to be little change. So the price should be the same or cheaper.

If history repeats itself, then the cheapest console usually wins.

... Is this sarcasm?

WRONG! Gamecube was $99.99 and it lost second place and never had a chance at first.

all gamers have been asking for from the PSP is a second analog stick. if that happens then it stand a good chance but i don't count my chickens before they hatch and nore should anyone else.

That's why I said "usually".

Nintendo's not going to keep the handheld crown, there going to lose it eventually and it can happen with the 3DS.

And where is your logic behind this? Isn't it just driven by hope that this company falls from grace, and possibly Sony retaking its crown?

I'm not saying Sony's next handheld is doomed, it may be (relatively) successful. Usurping the 3DS is simply out of the question, however. Once the market chooses a leader, and the momentum gets rolling, it's impossible to stop. This goes for any console or company - it's not as if Nintendo had a chance once they let the PS2 take off. That is why this "Sony waits and tops Nintendo" plan doesn't work. (unless Nintendo pulls a "599 US dollars" type error)

Or, by "wait," you mean waiting the 3DS gen out. Launching maybe 4 years later, something like what the DS was to the GBA, or the PS1 to the SNES. This still requires some sort of crazy unique idea, and it still means 3DS leads its own gen.

I think it's just a rumor.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

PSP has been pretty successful it has not been the run away success that NDS has been but it can hold its own. Considering everyone in Japan and their mother have bought an NDS in multiple colors it is no surprise. I think it is actually amazing that they managed to sell as many as they have (there is just so much disposable income in a household).

PSP has some great games, NDS may have a few more however I am not convinced that it is a better handheld. It has just lowered everyone's expectations of what a handheld game should be. I wanted a console like experience where I could pause and resume my console at any time and PSP has provided that for me.

NDS has brought everyone's grand parents into the gaming fold and I think it is great. It has also increased the market for puzzle games which was lacking  in previous gen.

Most mature games have come to PSP however I am hoping software makers would embrace PSP more and create more games for it.

PSP 4000 with a 3D screen would be awesome ;)

Sony's never had the handheld crown?

I've never said I expect Sony to take over, it could very well be some other company but right now Sony is it's only competitor. The X360 released a year before the Wii yet the Wii surpassed the X360 in a fairly short period of time.

We'll just have to wait and see but there's no way Nintendo is going to keep the handheld title, if Apple get's serious into gaming then Nintendo should really be afraid of the competition.

Considering how hard the iPod raped the Walkman, who's the enemy exactly?

Funny thing about your implication here, is the fact that PSP has actually had more color variants than DS in Japan. lol.
