Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Rumor: Microsoft Says Kinect Not $150! Gives New Price!

Even at $120 it's still too high of a price IMO. Without an Xbox 360, which seems to be the majority of people they're marketing this thing for, you're still talking a good $460 for a new console, Kinect, and a game.

Even if you already own a 360 and want Kinect you need to shell out $180 for the hardware and a game, which is essentially as much as a Wii with Wii Sports Resort.

If MS wants any sort of success with this shovelware filled console add on, they need to release it at $100 TOPS.

Like I said before. Making people think its a $150 was just so the final price seems like a bargain.

Mission accomplished.

I do not see how preventing early preorders with higher price can be a "smart marketing move".

Well obviously there are people who will buy it at $150 and even more. But I dont' think that price will appeal to the masses.

How about $120 and the Sports and Adventure title bundled?

Who cares Kinect sucks anyway!

I still remember the times when we thought it was going tobe $50, now $120 is called epic.

I remember this very well, ill try and find out all the people who said "over $100 would be suidcide"

What I notice floating around is:

1 - MS is clearly holding back on deciding price and multiple options seem to be getting considered

2 - MS has clearly stated they want to try and keep everything profitable now

3 - MS desperately wants to push their console out into broader demographics and compete with Wii

4 - MS may be sitting on higher than preferred manufacturing costs, with changes already made to reduce Kinect hardware components

5 - MS 360 sales are predictably flattening (5 years old after all) and they want to try and boost interest and are using Kinect linked to the new model (designed to better support Kinect) almost as a re-launch

The only likely scenario I see right now is MS is torn between selling Kinect at a price which may well be at cost or even a loss (because there are plenty of clues the cost of the thing is higher than they'd like to make) to drive the sales and market penetration they want or pricing higher to make it a profitable peripheral but potentially harming market penetration and growth (because there are plenty of clues they want to keep everything profitable around 360 right now).

I think in the end it will come down whether they final push it as more of a platform or a peripheral - my guess is that they might well go with a lower price in the end and eat margin for the sake of marketshare : but reluctantly.

If they do open at a higher price and sales are sluggish I also expect them to quickly decide to sacrifice margin as well.

Sony with Move are probably in a slightly better place regarding cost/price as they seem to be very much positioning the device as a peripheral and its based on well established tech now - on the other hand that strategy normally results in weaker sales and they do seem to be in danger into falling into the 'too many options' trap with the multiple configurations around Move.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

That wont be enough... you will need to find peopel who though over $100 was suicide and now think $119 is awesome.

I doubt you will find many... if any.

I, for instance, always said it should be sub $100 ideally and I still believe that.

But you cant fault the approach of MS here, its getting great pre-orders by all accounts at $149 and if true this will seem like a drop before its even released... smart.

Here you said that you do think it will be below $147, but thats not sub $100 thats sub $146

I'm not faulting what microsoft are doing here (because what there doing has worked)  i do remmeber a lot of people slating it for being $149 and that price tag showed up in a lot of place, now there is a rumour of $119 it sounds much better than $149, That's why everyone is praising it now ..Microsoft has made people happy with this price, by making gamers think it could have been much worse

Top post although I think next time if you could maybe just hold off posting that would be smashing for some reason I was thinking your post brought nothing to this discussion.

I was right... it did not

Kinect as seen by PS3 owners ...if you can pick at it   ...post it ... Did I mention the 360 was black and Shinny? Keeping Sigs obscure since 2007, Passed by the Sig police 5July10.

I wont buy it since there is nothing which interesets me at the moment. I want finally play with that thing to see what the hype is about. If its good then the Price is ok no matter if 150 or 120 or 80. But they need some interesting Software first. I hope they will show something new soon.
