Forums - Gaming Discussion - # of Units sold by the year ending 2012

Pescatore85 said: PS3 73 millions Wii 51 millions Xbox360 49 millions
This is the most accurate one so far. The PS3 numbers will be a little higher, with the Wii selling about 10M fewer, and the 360 selling about 6M more: PS3 75M Wii 40M 360 55M I like how the industry speculations show the Wii line going flat (barely anyone will be buying it in about 3-4 years). Well, the PS3 is too advanced now, but it will be just right within a year or two. The 360 will be a little outdated, with the Wii collecting dust. These are basically the researching industry's answers, but with a lot fewer explainations.

PS3 - 67 million Japan - 12 America - 28 Other- 27 Wii - 54 million Japan - 20 America - 18 Other - 16 Xbox 360 - 52 million Japan - 2 Americas - 33 Other - 17 D'oh, rabid anti-americanism will prevent the Xbox from winning the next-gen console war, but I bet they win the U.S. market handily. Just for the record I live in Seattle and will probably buy and Xbox after a price cut in may. Remember, the last gen saw 160 million units sold, so this generation will probably be more. My guess above is 173, but there is no way of predicting the growth in "other". PS2 105 (and counting) Xbox 24 GC 21 DC 10 total (approx) 160

Lifetime Sales Prediction - 6/29/2013
Wii U - 38 million
XBOX One - 88 million
Playstation 4 - 145 million

Umm... could you give links to these "researching industry's answers"? Nintendo is reaching for a far broader audience than Sony and Microsoft. If they succeed with Wii like they did with the DS, the Wii will be a clear winner. Nintendo is also interested in spreading its market to new countries. I think N has pretty good chances of breaking through in Russia, China and Korea. The Wii is gathering such a momentum (game makers are hopping in, "playing is believing" etc.) that the sales won't go flat for a long time. The problem with 360 and PS3 is that in spite they will have lots of great games, making great games is a big risk for the makers because of the investments made in them and the low profit. I bet WarioWare Smooth Moves will outsell Tom Clancy games, for example.

Okay, here's one: CLICK HERE!!!!!!!!!! They give the Wii and PS3 about 10M less than I think they will get, but that's about what I thought the 360 will get. I'm talking about 2012, but they are talking about 2010, so the PS3 will probably get up to my numbers. And with the DS, there's barely any great games for it, while the PSP is getting more and more great games (Killzone: Liberation, GTA: VCS, MGS: PO, and a lot more, when the DS only got FFIII and one other one.) Don't forget how IGN said the biggest surprise for the PSP in 06 was that it had so many great games, and they think 07 will be even better for the PSP! Especially if Sony releases a new version of it. PSP Slim, not PSP2.

PSP has lots of great games, but only for the hardcore gamers. There's no games like Nintendogs, Brain Training or Pokemon, at least that I know of. Gamerankings tells that the best DS games have received slightly higher scores than the PSP ones. Sony should definitely release a smaller clam-version of PSP. Now it's too vulnerable unless you use the leather bag and the battery life sucks.

The top ten games for the DS, in terms of highest average scores, are slightly higher than that of the PSPs top ten. But, when you look at the number of PSP games that are in area right below 9/10, you'll see that that number is growing a lot quicker than the DS's. There are more great games for the DS in it's life, but the PSP has had a lot more great games than the DS in the past year, and it will probably keep going that way. The PSP has about the same number of titles, but the PSP games get higher scores than the DS games overall. (And the ratio of PSP games reviewed to DS games reviewed is about 1.5:1) A clam version of the PSP won't happen this time around, but it might happen in the future. No doubt a lot of people will say they copied Nintendo, (and the only reason companies copy each other, which Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft do constantly, is to try to get the customers happy) but a lot of customers would be happy. I see Sony sticking with the disc drive in the PSP, as it allows for a lot more space than a tiny cartridge does (at least for the money), and it's harder to get hacked. And I'm not a fanboy, I just gather a lot of information, and then make decisions based upon what I have found. It's surprising the amount of times people are called fanboys when people disagree. I've been called a Sony fanboy, a Nintendo fanboy, and even a Microsoft fanboy. I'm just kidding about Microsoft. They are even more evil than Nintendo and Sony combined!!!!!

I don't doubt that the PSP games are better as everyone claims so far, but are they more portable? When I first played the psp many of the title were PS2 type titles. Even if the games were completely original, they still played like a console game. Here's a line from IGN's Portable Ops review "Kojima Productions is releasing Portable Ops, a true successor to the gameplay from the console games." Here's a line from IGN's Vice City Stories review "while things have been cleaned up or expanded a bit here or there, it's still largely the same game that we first saw with Grand Theft Auto III" I use these lines not to imply these games are ports (they are not) but to point out that they play like console games and not portable games. The DS is successful because of games like Nintendogs and Brain Age which can be picked up and played for 10 min while you are on the train. Many of the good PSP titles require longer play time which begs the question of why you wouldn't just play console/pc games on a larger screen.

The PSP has had better games last year ,and things will continue thas way probably this one .DS is stronger in the pick and play categories due to its touch screen and stylus but overall the PSP is a better system .In the multiplattform games the PSP smokes the DS (Lego Star Wars II ,Star Wars Deadly Alliance ,Worms ,Marvel Ultimate ALliance ,Justice League Heroes ,Pro Evolution Soccer,Burnout ,Ridge Racer ,etc ) and the top PSP games in the technical level are just impossible for the DS;GTA LCS ,GTA Vice City ,Metal Gear Portable Ops ,Valhalla Knights ,Moto GP ,Ace COmbat X ,Tekken Dark Ressurrection ,Monster Hunter Freedom ,Daxter ,Killzone Liberation ,Socom Fireteam Bravo ... But the DS has some compelling games and the big difference is in two games ;Nintendogs and Brain Training .With Nintendogs they have a iron grip on the kid and girl market and with Brain Training the same in the adult and even elder (I have seen hundreds of people coming to buy the DS and BT for their grandpa to try to "help him out " ) markets .Its a bit sad that this is the driving force of the market but thats the reality .Plus ,its cheaper . If only Sony abandoned its "hardcore " approach to the portable market and just brought to occident the Brain Training (PSP has three at least ) PSP games by Sega and the puppy game of Yukes it could stop this a bit ,but somehow they are blind about this .That and lower the price of course ...250 euros/dollars is too much for a portable system . For the next year both will have good software ....the DS at least will get some quality RPG by Square (DQIX ,FFXII RWings ,FFtactics 2 )and the usual fare by Nintendo (more BT ,Nintendogs ,Mario ,Wario ,etc ) and the PSP will have high-profile games as Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core ,Monster Hunter 2 ,Ratchet & Clank Size Matters ,Afterburner Black Falcon ,Tales of the World Radiant Mythology ,Final Fantasy Tactics:The Lion War ,Dungeons and Dragons Tactics,Test Drive Unlimited,Tomb Raider Anniversary,Loco Roco 2 and many others that will at least provide as good software as this year one .

As for the estimates .... PS3 ......95 million . Wii ........60 million . X360 ......38 million .
