so $150 plus $ 60 for a game=$210 is starter price then .

oh yea, they aren't even including a game!

Hope the bundles do atleast.

  Kinect! who needs video games!

I really can't imagine those geames they demoed at E3 to cost 60$ a peice. I would imagine at least one will be bundled and maybe others either compiled into a collection or sold at ~20-30$. But then again, who knows (certainly not me)?

Guess they were embarassed to reveal the price at E3.. I would be too. Who in the right mind would spend $150 on this? Especially after we've seen the lineup of mediocre games for it (which are priced at $60).

Honestly, depending on the actual cost, a $150 pricepoint for Kinect would make sense from a business perspective.  A device like Kinect is not the same as a something like the 360 or ps3.  You can't sell it at a loss and expect to make that money back through sales of software and accessories.  Hell, Kinect doesn't even HAVE any accessories, and while hardcore gamers may buy 10 games for a console, the market they're aiming for with Kinect likely do not.

Just look at the Wii.  Remove Nintendo's titles and the software sales are pretty weak.  There are plenty of people out there that buy Wii Fit or Just Dance and nothing more.

The reason Nintendo is making money hand over fist is because:

1. They've made a profit on every system sold since day one.  That's profit on over 70 million units, plus extra controllers and whatnot.

2.  Their first party titles sell incredibly well.  Wii Play, Wii Fit, Mario Kart, etc. are all over 20 million units sold, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii will join them eventually.

Microsoft has no software that they can expect to sell near that well, thus their only option to ensure profitability is to sell the actual device at a profit.

I think Kinect will really struggle at this pricepoint, but it may be their only option given the technology they chose.

Price doesn't matter, people buy shitty Apple overpriced IPad's for 800, so why couldn't motion controler sell for 150? I wouldn't buy it (but not because of the price), but that doesn't mean there isn't a market for it, rabid fanboys and people falling for the cool factor will get it and there is a billion of them.

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

A few people on here are just being hypocrites. How can you say "Kinect will fail because of the price" while in other threads say "Move will sell very well, better then Kinect"? When if you get all the things for Move it will cost more?! That logic makes no sense at all.

If we accept $149 is correct which it is starting to looklike it is then that will have a huge impact on it's sales. Most analysts were predicting around $70-$100 mark.

I will wait to see what the software is like before i pay that amount for it because it is a lot.

The same goes with Move. Right now both are way too expensive.

$140 is alot for a motion camera alone / end argument

These are the things I found intertesting:

"**175 MB of memory required." So to use Kinect you will occupy ~70% of the memory of an Arcade. Hence any "Arcade" replacement with the slim design will only come with a Kinect Bundle if a) the Arcade replacement has a built in HDD, or b) the Arcade replacement doesn't have a HDD (stays with the 256MB internal memory) but also comes packed in with a XXXGB external memory device).

Note to current Arcade owners: You will need some additional memory for game save etc when you buy Kinect, or better still upgrade to a new XBox 360.

"Works alongside your Xbox 360 controller to enhance your entertainment."...interesting. Already seem to be signalling intent to release games where you use both Kinect and Controller.

What do they mean by Wi-Fi extension cable? Surely this is the cable that connects the Kinect to the console, if so, how is that Wi-Fi?

"Here's what you'll need to use the Kinect sensor:

  • Xbox 360 console
  • 6 feet (1.8 meters) between you and your television for play space†
  • You!"

Erm, I think you need a game too. OK OK, you'll be able to do stuff without a game, but the main purpose for the Kinect is gaming. Kinect should be listed with a game.

New Xbox 360: Ports

2 front, 3 rear USB ports
1 Kinect port

What's a Kinect Port? Given older 360 skus don't have one what's the equivalent port?

On price: If you've owned a 360 for a while it means you've pretty much got reasonable value from the price you paid, or you will have by the time Kinect comes out. Buying a $149 new peripheral a game is a pretty good Christmas present even if it's a "family" Christmas present. However I don't think buying a replacement 360 and Kinect is gonna fly with too many families.

I don't think people should dismiss this prospective Kinect price on the basis of "what's important is grabbing the casual crowd and using Kinect to convince them to by a 360 rather than a Wii (and to a lesser extent rather than a PS3)". 360 most likely has reached 50% of it's lifetime install base (Assuming Kinect gives 360 a good sales boost and extends the life of the 360). MS really needs a substantial proportion of that install base to buy Kinect for Kinect games to get a reasonable attach rate. If the $149 price is going to be a barrier to existing 360 owners buying it, then the price will be substantially adjusted, or a Kinect game bundle will be $149. MS needs the support of the current base.

So Il have to pay ~ 200$ for it and a game even if Im a 360 owner? I never taught that Move will manage to create a massive market, but Kinekt had some potential to expand the 360 userbase... not anymore...

The Kinect Port is a proprietary port that both connects Kinect to the 360 and powers it (no external power source needed). That means with new 360's you only need one cable to set up Kinect. With older 360's you need to use a USB port and plug in an external power adapter for Kinect.

Great summary of thoughts. That's more what I intended this thread for instead of "LOL pricing fail" being exclaimed over and over again. If that's all you want to say please feel free to say it. But also include some type of reasoning to why you think that. It makes for better discussion and less needless argument that goes nowhere.

I think that Microsoft's initial push for Kinect is purely at the casual market. The general public have spent much more on much less in recent years concerning tech and gadgetry. Things like the iPad and the Wii Fit balance board have had extremely great adoption rates regardless of their high price so $150 Kinect may seem high to those of us trolling forums for a living but to the outside world it may be totally reasonable. The launch time should also be considered. It's releasing around the time when the Holiday season really picks up and people are a lot more wallet happy.

On the negative side... $150 without a game? Either someone has omitted some information somewhere, this isn't final, or Microsoft just wants to shoot themselves in the foot with their existing install base. If their rumoured Kinect bundle prices are somewhat accurate then those who only want a standalone unit are being terribly screwed and MS is delirious to their existing install base's loyalty to the Xbox platform.
