what the fuck?

Around the Network

Having said the above, I also agree with Mr Khan that the OP is off track with some of his claims, at least when he applies them to all of Christianity.

Mr Khan said:

This is only one view of Christianity, however. What you've stated is a Lutheran viewpoint (to a dgree, i could be generalizing), while the Catholics always did put more emphasis on works, and the Calvinists threw all of that junk out the window in favor of predestination, and the modern-day fundamentalists who will cleave to all the little fragments of old testament Christianity that they very well please.

Frankly, speaking for "Christianity" as a block anymore is itself erroneous.

Religion aparts us instead of bringing us together

No, human nature  - the need for tribal identity - does that. All religions are about social unity. People use it to their own needs, desires and faults, like they do anything else.

Not true.  In fact, the Abrahamic religions are tribal and do not guide us toward social unity.

Western religions (think Greeks and Romans) are more socially advanced religions than tribal Judaism, Christianity and Islam.  The Western Empires developed tolerant religious ideals to make empire building and the inclusion of many different religious groups easier.  Thus, Roman gods and the gods of other people's in their empire coexisted, and the Romans were receptive of other religions just as they expected others to be of theirs.  Interestingly, Pontius Pilate remarked that the 'conquered make rules for the conquerers' when Romans in Palestine observed the Sabbath and other Jewish laws while the Jews made no accomodations for Roman religion.

The tribal religions are not about social unity, they are primarily concerned with the their own ethnic tribe.  Judaism is the most obvious example, but the same idea carries through to Christianity and Islam.  Jesus even initially insulted a woman and refused to heal her child because she was not a Jew, but a neighboring Cannonite (and thats after revisions from Paul who made the religion open to outsiders).  Past the ethnic issues themselves, the tribal Abrahamic religions are not tolerant of other people's religions.  Not only do they regard them as completely false, but throughout history they have forced other people to convert to their religion..

The other thing is that many people condemn christianity and christians for the laws of the old testament. By this i mean the arguement of 'You can't believe in some of the bible and not all of it'.

The old testament is the law before Jesus Christ.

God cannot be near sin. This means that for a person to be with God they must be completely without sin. This is why the old testament has many laws or whatever about animal sacrifice. The sacrifice pays for the sins, and thus the individual can be in the presence of God. Jesus Christ dying on the cross was a sacrifice for the sins of everyone, making these laws obsolete.

In the Old Testament, God told the Israelites to rape and kill children after they conquered their city.  Not quite the 'God cannot be near sin' idea that you state.

Look, I appreciate that you hate religion, or maybe just Christianity, I don't know, but anyway, this was a totally unnecessary attack.

This thread is not about that, you're not on topic here.  You don't have to come running every time someone talks about his faith and turn it into a war.

I don't know what went on in the thread the OP refers to, and maybe that's why you came in here with that comment, but please leave it there.

I'm quoting the Bible.  If a thread about Christianity comes up, how is it wrong to directly quote what the Bible says?

I believe that there is a higher power or a god/gods out there somewhere. But I can't put my faith into this type of stuff. But kudos to anyone who does, doesn't bother me if others do. I just choose not to.

My thoughts exactly.

honestly, though, try as you might to try to clear any misconceptions, the other side will never listen. this not only applies to christians but atheists, agnostics, muslims, jews, etc. etc....
it is common for people to accept only their own perception of the world around them. to these people, all other views, beliefs, and ideals are rubbish. i applaud you for trying to shed some light on your religion, but, in the end, i don't think many people will be swayed.

Are you serious?  GTFO.  Your inability to live and let live offends me.  [edit: directed at the second half of your post.  The first half, while the tone is unnecessary, is a legitimate statement of your own opinion.]

Heres my take: I identify myself as a Catholic, however I dont believe in church as an institution (history has proven just how corrupt the Vatican can be) so I try to mix good Christian values into my every day life all the while realising thats its my life, I will lead it the way I want, make mistakes, give into vices once in a while but at my core I know I'm a good person and I treat others with respect and kindness. This is what I believe was Christ's message; be the best person you can be and don't try to elevate yourself to a higher level. Just live your life, be good and you will be rewarded.

That's my take.

If you don't see the Pope as a pillar of your religion, you're not Catholic, you're Protestant.  I mean, self-identification, sure, but facts is facts.

But talking about how violent God is in the bible is very relevant since its a very common misconception that God has only done good deeds. Which clearly isn't accurate, especially in the context of the old testament. But if the Old Testament wasn't useful and relevant for Christians, then why keep it in the bible?
