Forums - Gaming Discussion - Kinect only supports two players, Move supports two-ish

From Joystiq:

PrimeSense reps also told me that the camera can "see" any number of people on the screen -- you can fit as many people in that camera as possible, and the computer will see all of them and can even recognize them as human shapes. But it can only run calculations on two people at a time, just because the processing power required to track all of the body's locations and movements is so great

Which explains why Joyride and even Kinect Sports only support up to two players.

And now from Gizmodo:

Four PlayStation Move controllers can connect to a PS3 at one time (or two PlayStation Move Controllers and 2 PlayStation Move sub-controllers).

It seems Move can support four players for any games that require JUST a standard Move control, but anything more and you're limited to two players max.  Even if they were to use all available bluetooth connections for Move controllers, that leads to a maximum of seven connected controllers.  Still one short for full four player action with both a controller and subcontroller per player.

They should've allowed the subcontroller to connect to the main controller ala the Nun-chuck to the Wiimote, thus avoiding this problem.

I'm not sure how Move and Kinect will compete with the Wii for the social gaming scene like this.  This is a serious flub for technology coming four years after the Wii.

Maybe Sony will offer a wire accessory for your sub controller to make it run off the same channel as the main controller that'll let us play 4 player CoD with Move support :D

i don't think there will be many "casual" multiplayer games that will require the Move and a subcontroller at the same time. i think sony even stated something in that regard.

it could be a problem with 4 player splitscreen FPS though, but frankly i think that would be negligible in the competition factor.

And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

LOL!!! there goes the "Bu but for $150 4 ppl can play!" argument, LOL don't ban me im just messing around =)

OT: So for PSmove you can play with up to 4 ppl(depending on the game?) as long as your only using the wand with no nav?

They could have made the subcontroller cheaper by connecting it to the main controller as well

Yeah, but in reality the controller probably costs less than $10 to make either way.

They're just charging $30 because it's wireless, even though a wire like that on the nunchuck is hardly inhibiting at all, and the nunchuck has more functionality given it contains gyroscopes, unlike the subcontroller.

The subcontroller is a total ripoff.  Really, all controllers are a ripoff given the cost of the parts, but the subcontroller is especially overpriced given the price of its competitors.

The game play shown only had one person registered playing, the people behind him dancing were there for the show.

I've thus far only seen one person playing Dance Central at a time.  The player has two backup dancers on screen, but only the central character is actually playing.

Move supports 4 players simultaneously and 3 players simultaneously if each player is required to have 2 Moves or a Move Nav. Thread title FAILS.
