Forums - Nintendo Discussion - IGN Rumor: Retro Studios is working on a new Donkey Kong game

http://wii.ign.com/articles/109/1096857p1.html

The rumors start flying around this time, just days before Nintendo pops the lid off its hugely secretive line-up at its E3 press conference. One of the wildest, but certainly credible, rumors we've just heard in the halls from those in the know: Retro Studios -- the Nintendo-funded studio that created Metroid Prime and its two sequels -- is now working its magic on a Wii game starring Donkey Kong.

Retro Studios' last released project was the Wii compilation Metroid Prime Trilogy and the last we spoke with them, the team was deep into its next project. "I think you'll be very excited when you find out what we're working on," the team told us last year without saying another word.

Donkey Kong is certainly a property that's a far cry from the mature Metroid franchise, but, if the rumors hold true, an attempt at a DK game could certainly stretch the team's creative muscles. The last Donkey Kong game was the Wii-remake of Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat from Nintendo's Tokyo team. Other external studios who have taken a crack at Donkey Kong include Rare with Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong 64, Namco with Donkey Konga, and Paon with DK King of Swing.

True or not, the Electronic Entertainment Expo begins on Tuesday, June 15th, with Nintendo's press conference beginning at 9 am PST.

I'd be quite happy to see this.  I'd be quite happy to see anything from Retro, just to verify that they still exist...

I saw that, hope it's true, and I would like it to be a Donkey Kong County 4 on 3DS rather than a 3d game on wii, it would be a kick-ass lauch title also there are already enough good platformers on Wii (both 2d and 3d) imo, also epic mickey and Sonic colours/ 4 are coming.

Kid Icarus.

KONG!!!

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

I am skeptical for two reasons

  1. It's Twitter
  2. It's IGN

But, then again, I'd rather see Retro do something else (I'd like to see Next Level Games do Donkey Kong ;))

I dunno, the twitter came from Peer Schneider, and I can't remember the last time he was inflicted by IGN Stupid Disease (which is ironic, considering his position...).

We only have two more days until we find out, but I'm willing to place a small wager that Retro is working on a Donkey Kong game.

I wouldn't suprise me and I hope that it is true.

To be honest, I don't care too much is it is 2 or 3d (I actually really liked DK64), but I would much prefer a 2.d art style not disimilar to Wario Land: The Shake Dimension, rather than the pre-rendered 3d featured in the DKC games.

I'm not the biggest fan of Donkey Kong being in a game from a non-Rare or non-in house Nintendo team but I'm most likely going to buy this first day if this is true.  I love Retro.

    Pixel Art can be fun.

Eh, I guess. If it's true, it's cool......but I was really hoping that Retro was working on a new IP.

I'd like to see Retro take a crack at DK.
