Forums - Gaming Discussion - Purchase Intent Low for Move and Natal

Sony's PlayStation Move and Xbox 360's Project Natal motion control solutions have been garnering a lot of the spotlight from core gamers and the press, but a new study reflects currently low purchase intent for the new devices.

Research firm OTX's U.S. tracking study GamePlan Insights polled a group of 2,000 gamers between May 23 and June 5, 2010, and found that 8 percent of the Xbox 360 market intends to buy Natal, and 6 percent of the PlayStation 3 market intends to purchase Move.

Of the people that are already planning on buying Natal and Move, 25 percent plan to preorder the controllers.

The low purchase intent figures reflect the current lack of information about compatible games for the devices. Microsoft and Sony are expected to reveal more motion-compatible games at next week's E3 event in L.A., where the controllers will be a central attraction, after which purchase intent may rise.

Neither piece of hardware has officially launched (Natal still goes by its codename), and Microsoft in particular plans on backing the controller's release with a substantial marketing push.

The GamePlan Insights study also said that 15 percent of the Xbox 360 market is aware of Natal, while the same percentage of the PS3 market is aware of the Move.

The study showed that Natal intenders have an average age of 25, versus 28 for the Move. Also, 30 percent of Move intenders are female, compared to 20 percent for Natal.

Natal intenders are also closely aligned with core Xbox 360 game tastes, with four out of five saying they like to play shooting games.

"While we are still months away from launch, the current data suggests that Natal gamers are definitely Xbox 360 purists, while Move gamers have a stronger interest in other platforms," OTX said.

Move intenders' tastes are more varied across genres like action, role-playing and shooters, which rank closely together as the top three preferred genres, OTX said.

The study revealed the top five games that Natal and Move intenders are currently interested in, exhibiting the gaming tastes of these early adopters:

Titles with strongest overlap among Natal intenders:

1. Gears of War 3 – X360 (47%)
2. Fable III – X360 (42%)
3. Call of Duty: Black Ops – X360 (38%)
4. Halo: Reach – X360 (34%)
5. Dead Space 2 – X360 (26%)

Titles with strongest overlap among Move Intenders:

1. LittleBigPlanet 2 – PS3 (42%)
2. Gran Turismo 5 – PS3 (32%)
3. SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs – PS3 (30%)
4. The Legend of Zelda 2 – Wii (26%)
5. Super Mario Galaxy 2 – Wii (21%)

sigh, they did not survey I would have added to that amount to ps move:(:(

my most interested list (ps move compatible)

1.Socom 4

2.Little Big Planet 2

3.Sports Champions

4.Resident Evil 5

5. Hopefully Ape Escape

also it's inetersting to see how none of the mini games made it to either list

finally you know the casuals they won't even be on sites like that so i am betting demand will be slightly higher for ps move and natal, but it all relies on pricing, matrketing and the games:):)

it's the future of handheld

The Legend of Zelda 2?

ahahahaahahaha....

This survey would have been better after E3 when we really get to see the games.

Badly timed poll?  After Sony has shown some up-and-coming Move games yet before E3 2010?  The only Natal tech shown is all based on last E3 and nothing new has yet been shown.  The poll is useless and should be redone after this E3.

Hmmm I wonder why the numbers are so low...

Oh yeah that's right.

Move and Natal hasn't been fully exposed to the general public.
There's hardly any full software shown for Natal.

So, out of the 15% who know about it, 8% plan to buy, before even seeing it doing anything usefull. How is that low?

Becuase 8% is low (in statistics, under 30% is rather low). You're basing the assumption that the precentage will go up if we know games. We don't know if it will, and we have seen it in action, so consumer can make a rational decision now.

Also, please tell me how 15%, 8% and 6% are not low?

Not suprising. We hardly now abnything about what games are supporting the peripherials, so its hard to get hyped.

Only 15% of people even know about it. There's no way someone who doesn't know about it would want to buy. So over 50% of the potential buyers "right now" want to buy it, and that's actually pretty big for a videogame peripheral. Very little actual software was shown so, again, lots of those who do know about it will be on a wait and see approach, and there wasn't any big mainstream media push for it either, so it's only natural few people know about it. Then again, most of the people who do know about it will fit the more enthusiastic crowd, so of course we can't extrapolate to say over 50% of Xbox 360 owners will buy it.

But the main point is, there's no such a thing as "under such % is low in statistics". It depends a lot on what you're looking at and how you're looking at it and what information you derive from it. And the information to be derived from this survey is absolutelly not "Natal is gonna be a bad seller".

'The Legend of Zelda 2'?

Lol whut?
