Forums - General Discussion - Anyone read any good books recently?

I'm reading The Ship of Destiny which is the 3rd and final book of The Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb. Its the best of the three books, so its looking like the trilogy will end with a bang.

I've just read two graphic novels. V For Vendetta and Kick Ass. Both were very good, especially V For Vendetta which I like just as much as Watchmen. Alan Moore is amazing.

I have read three of her trilogies.

I am just about to start the Rain Wild Chronicles.

This woman is simply amazing.

Have you read the Farseer or Tawny Man trilogies?  They are absolutely stunning.  I know The LiveShip Traders is set in the Elderling universe.  Is it great?

I just read World War Z and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Great books.

I concur. The first 3 books are awesome, but then the plot goes nowhere and he gets incredibly preachy and starts extolling the virtues of capitalism over communism etc. Plus he likely copied ideas from the late Robert Jordan and IIRC insulted him or joked about him being gravely ill. Needless to say, I never finished Goodkind's series.

Also, I would not recommend reading A Song of Ice and Fire if you don't like depressing books.

I liked Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy, it's got a very interesting magic system and the world is different from typical fantasy.

I'm about to start reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Joe Abercrombie's Before They Are Hanged. Anyone know if the latter is good?

Abercrombie is  great writer: Best characters I've seen in quite a while, great action (without relying on it), unique-enough plot. Really light on worldbuilding and stuff.

BUT if you think A Song of Ice and Fire is depressing, good luck with Abercrombie. It's not really that it's depressing so much as it is that he be kind of...grim? Macabre? It's noirish fantasy at times.

But still very, very good. I highly recommend it.

Hmm I do like worldbuilding, but hopefully the good characters will make up for it. I'm going to try it out and see how it goes. Thanks for the info!

While this is true, the 'Soldier Son' trilogy was absolutely terrible.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Ender's Game

Ender's Shadow

Shadow of the Hegemon

Children of the Mind

Speaker for the Dead

All part of the Ender series, all amazing in every way. I'd say that Ender's Game is the best I've read in the series so far.

Of course I'm also reading Ruroni Kenshin, but that doesn't really count as a book.

Oh crap, I gotta read The Hunger Games in the summer.

What kinds backwards school makes us read in the summer!

I've read To Kill A Mockingbird in the 8th grade.  It's an excellent book.  I can't believe you didn't read it.

I don't like reading. It always makes me feel stupid.

I mean, is there supposed to be a point to running up and touching a freaking door? Does it display the innocence of children? The epic mystery of Boo Radley?

Personally, I thought that scene was a waste of my time.

Dtewi, this was before cable TV and video games. Children had to find some way to fill their time.
