What do you think of the first two books in the sword of truth series? I've watched the tv show and I hear the book is far better so I'm interested in starting the series.

Recently I've read The Name of the Wind, Ender's Shadow and Halo Evolutions all of which have been very good. Especially the Name of the Wind, the author has set up a amazing universe and I can't wait for the second novel to be released, highly recommended.

Currently I'm reading the first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series and so far it's excellent.

I really like it so far. The first book is probably the most meticulously plotted first book of a serious that I've ever read. There's plenty going on in the plot, lots of interesting character development. It does get slow in a couple of parts, but for the most part, it's a pretty entertaining read.

I've watched about half the first season of the series, and while it doesn't exactly follow the events in the book (which I think led to some backlash among fans), it is certainly in the spirit of the books, so if you liked that, then I highly recommend you at least give the first book a shot.

I've read Ender's Game, but a few people I work with have told me that Ender's Shadow is better, so I'll have to give that one a try eventually.

It's not my favorite series since the characters sometimes make decisions that don't make any sense, but I do enjoy it and I have watched the first two seasons. I think I'll pick up the first book in the series and see how it is.

I thought that Ender's Shadow opened very strongly, and for the vast majority of the novel I thought it equaled or bettered Ender's Game, I just felt the ending was a little weak. But I do recommend it.

Also one of my all time favorite series is The Prince of Nothing. If you like fantasy, mixed with philosophy and a truly fascinating world with deep characters and amazing story line I highly recommend this series. It can be difficult to read though if you don't have a very strong grasp of the english language.

No! Stop! DON'T read Terry Goodkind!

Trust me, I'm not just spewing bullshit. I read probably 40 books a year, and a good 20-25 of those are fantasy/spec fic. Terry Goodkind is the WORST. Not just writer-wise, but the bullshit, heavy-handed Ayn Randian philosophy he brings in to later volumes...I could go on, and if you want will literally provide links that documents his terribleness both as an author and a person.

I really, really recommend you pick up 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss. It's one of the best books published in any genre in the last half decade--I promise you will be blown away by it.

Whats wrong with Terry Goodkind? I haven't read any of his books so this is a legitimate question.

I concur btw with The Name of the Wind, that book was masterful. I just wish Patrick Rothfuss would release the second novel already, especially since he said he had already finished the entire trilogy.

He's gone into some detail on how those were very, very rough drafts, and that he's a perfectionist who needs his books to not just be good, not great, but fine-tuned to perfection--their ideal state.

That being said, he recently announced on his blog that the second book will be out in March 31, 2011. Which is a ways away still, unfortunately.

I'll get back to you on Terry Goodkind tomorrow--I'm headed to bed and don't have the energy to type/link some of the miserable things that have forever turned me off to him.

EDIT: Nice, AND an R. Scott Bakker fan. Have you read 'The Judging Eye' yet?

I'm currently reading Crime & Punishment. I've read about 2/3 and it's a masterpiece imo. Btw, is it wierd to recognize yourself in the main character?

Some other books I've read recently that I would recommend is "According to Mary Magdalene" by Swedish Marianne Fredriksson and Conn Iggulden's series "The Emperor". I would also recommend Iggulden's series about Djingis Khan.

I'm probably not supposed to talk about manga books, but you should definitely read CLAMP's xxxHolic! That's an Epic!

This book is awesome. And yes, you are a killer. Get yourself some treatment, stat!

PS - The end is amazing too. Simple, but poetic.

PS2 - I have been reading onlu Dostoievski for a while now.

I read Brothers Karamazov. A masterpiece. a couple of dull moments throughout and you have to get used to Dostoievski's style. The scene with the story of the Great Inquisitor is absolutely perfect.

After, read Crime & Punishment. Another masterpiece. Doesnt have dull moments like BK, but doesnt have such great scenes like it. Except maybe the end (IMO).

The, read Notes from the Underground. Short and good.

Now, Im reading Memories from the House of the Dead (I think that's the name in english). Its based on the author1s time in prison in Siberia.

After, I already bought 2 more of his books - The Idiot and The Gambler.

So Im set for a long time.

raced through his majesty's dragon/temeraire

completely reset the bar on how good fantasy lit should be.

also reading the complete sherlock holmes- the rare old book that is easy to pick up and still better than almost everything pubished today

I just finished Skeleton Creek by Patrick Carman. The book is written as Ryan McCray, the main characters journal, as he and his best friend, Sarah Fincher, try to uncover the mystery of Skeleton Creek. What makes this book stand out is the online videos. At the beginning of each chapter, there is a code you enter into sarahfincher.com which unlocks a video that sarah recorded while they were out exploring, or when she is trying to put the clues together. Its an easy read and I just picked up the sequel, Ghost in the Machine.

I read The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. It's one of my favorite book :3

Just read The Talisman by Steven King.

Fantastic book. I read it years ago and decided to re-read it.

I'm reading Mechanicum by Graham McNeill in the Horus Heresy series now.

I'd reccommend In Cold Blood by Truman Capote and I am Legend by Richard Matheson to anybody, (the latter being far better then the recent movie with Will Smith) as they're my two favourite books.
