Forums - Gaming Discussion - If GTA4 isn't a 10/10 game, why did it get reviews like it did?

Well it deserves 10/10 so I don't know what to tell you.

Consider "just kidding" or "I'm sorry."

Huh?

The game was alright but nowhere near a perfect 10, I got over half-way through the game and got to a mission I couldn't beat trying to chase some guy down in car, and just got bored and quit! I didn't hate the game and if it had gotten a score around 9.5 I probably wouldn't argue against it but it is not a 10 to me as Chrono Trigger is the only game I would say is perfect!

Remember how GTA4 was praised as a masterpiece?  It looked like there was a hype bandwagon behind it.  I wouldn't say it was that Rock Star targeting marketing that resulted in it, because I find a review like this on YouTube, and it is a 10/10:

This was common for reviews of the game early.  Now, you go out and talk to people, it would be HUH?  So, what happened here that caused the game to get into a 10/10 and that be the belief for the game?  Why early, and why not seen as that later on?  Ok, maybe I am wrong, and people do still feel it is a 10/10 game.  If it isn't true, GTA4 being 10/10, the above review looks like someone caught in a trance, and a form of groupthink.

Can anyone explain?

From the start there was a group that thought it was 10/10 and a group that thought it wasn't. INteresting enough people from that second group
often thought Saint's Row 2 was better. SO they were looking for different things, they didnt care for the polish, excellent dialogue, fantastic graphics and atmosphere GTA4 offered. They wanted tanks and airplanes.

I think GTA4 is a 10/10 for what it is, I dont think its any less ofr the things it misses compaired to GTA:SA.

Lavish Review events can't hurt..

I tried to like GTA IV, though I just couldn't click with it.... perhaps it's just not my type of game. Though that doesn't mean that it isn't a 10 to others. If we all loved the same game then we may as well all be clones.... or stepford wives XD.

I liked GTA4. Still doesnt deserve 10/10 more like 9/10.

I have to say I dont like Saints Row that much. I prefer GTA and the darker atmosphere fits also.

But GTA4 was a step back imo. San Andreas was gigantic. GTA4 felt like GTA3 in HD.

I liked a lot of things in GTA4 like the TV and the Internet and so on. But it feels like they just are not able to put everything you can do in Vice City and San Andreas and GTA4 in one game.

Why not including every possibility from earlier GTAs in and add new things to it. That way you would create step by step an increasingly more fun and realistic GTA.

GTA SA was just not that fast boring because there was so much to do. The Story in GTA4 was good but soon you discovered everything and playing became repetitive. In SA you could discover hundreds of things. They need to go back to a world were you can do more and more stuff and not less stuff. A GTA SanAndreas in HD could be overwhelming.

In SA you had 3 citys and tons off things outside of it. In GTA4 you were in this little town no planes no hidden military base no mountains no calm landsides. I thought yeah GT HD will be even bigger and better then SA. But it was not. It was more polished and a few details were worked out pretty good. The Physics were great in GTA4 now they have worked out the details and the engine and the next time they can invest more time into things you can do. BTW a fully destructible environment would be great. It has probably something to do with the development costs that games are stagnating in scale. Maybe we will never see a GTA which allows you to do hundreds of things.

I can see a lot of games having great stuff to do. Why not taking everything you can do in all the games and put it together in one game. RPG Dialogues, RPG depth combined, RPG item system with the Physics of GTA combined with a fully destructible environment like in Red Faction combined with the size of San Andreas combined with All stuff you can do in Oblivion Fallout3 and all GTAs in one game.

GTA4 was great but my expectations where high. Its probably because of the HD graphic thats why they cut the variety and focused on particular things. The Next GTA will be better I am absolutely sure.

I think it's pretty obvious that reviewers get paid off to jack up the score. Reviews really mean a lot from many gamers, and publishers know this so they expoit it.

GTA4, while a fun game, is definitely not a 10. It's a 9 at best. It had plenty of flaws in the game, awkward controls, and had pretty bad replay value.

So, exactly how much did RockStar pay the review of this review, that game the game a 10/10?  I never heard of this reviewer at all, and they go off and give the game a 10/10.  Others in this thread also feel the game deserved a 10/10 to.  So what is up with that?

Um $100,000.. I dunno, what kinda question is that?

I just find it odd that lately it seems more and more games are recieving 9s and 10s, when the quality of games seems to get progressively worse each gen, not better. There are exceptions of course, but I'm just talking in general. Almost EVERY major franchise game that is hyped up seems to get at least a 9 nowadays. It's like you just expect it. This is occuring so much that 9 and 10 ratings are starting to lose their value.

I hear that many mainstream reviewers recieve very nice accomidation when they fly in to test the new big game to come out. Things like a freestay at a nice hotel and free meal, things like that..
