Forums - General Discussion - can religion be blamed for war?

No.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

Not necessarily. There are some cases where it's probably a yes but most wars probably used religion as an excuse only. Had there been no religion to use as an excuse, there would have been another excuse.

Religion, greed, pride and human nature have all been reasons for the worst wars in history.

To answer the question in the title: Yes. If video games can be blamed for violence, a dog can be blamed for making a man murder, and Betty Rubble can be blamed for making me masturbate, then yes--religion can be blamed for war. That doesn't mean that religion, that dog, Betty Rubble, or video games is the actual cause, though.

And can the world be a better place with no religion? I think that religion is one of the reasons people aren't worse. If all that was keeping people from doing wrong was the law, I'd have killed and raped you all by now. The fact that someone told me, a long time ago, that God was watching my every move (knowing that he's watching when I have sex really turns me on!) and that I'd go to Hell if I killed and raped you guys is the only thing keeping you all safe. I would have made it look like an accident, too.

I guess the world would be better without SOME of those religions, but who am I to judge? I'm just a man who likes boobs.

I have to doubt that, there is a story of a time when Montreal (quebec is 83.6% christian) felt the terrible effects of a police strike.  WIthout police on duty six banks were robbed, over 100 shops were looted, there were twelves fires, two men were murdered, and $3,000,000 in property was destroyed.  This was in a single day, Religion doesn't keep the peace, police do.

Some.

But not all. There are usually other underlying ideologies or desires (mostly greed) that surpass religion as being a cause.

I pretty much agree with you. I think cultural differences lead to border or civil conflict, but wars are mostly fought over greed or the poor sense of justice.

Well the wars between Catholics and Protestants sure were about religion.

Exactly. Mass religions fit into your definition as far as history is concerned.

Yes, if its a religious war ;)

Not all wars of course.

^ title.

People use God and what their sacred texts say, to justify what they want to do, including going to war.  A godless ideology like Marxism, also used its beliefs to justify going to war.
