Forums - General Discussion - My University Dilemma! Please weigh in.

Yeah so I will be entering college as a freshman this fall and I am still not 100% sure of which school I'm going to. I applied to 13 schools and got into 8 (2 waitlists). I narrowed it down to 2 schools, one that I am already set on going to and another that offered me a free ride. The problem is no one is supporting my decision to go to the school I like even though it is much better. It goes something like this:

School A:

+ One of the best schools in the country academically

+ 13 hours away by car, 2 by plane and I always wanted to go away for college.

+ Has a vibrant social scene close to a huge city.

+ More flexible curriculum and has great departments for the subjects I'm interested in.

- Expensive as hell, will have to take out loans.

- Weather gets really cold.

- My father flat out won't pay for anything.

- Only my mother supports me going.

School B:

+ Full ride.

+ I know the school well.

+ My parents will buy me a car if I go. (I don't want a car)

- 20 minutes away from my house.

- I've been on the campus for 7 years and absolutely won't do 4 more.

- Rigid core curriculum that no one enjoys and gets in the way of the major.

- No social life, no frats, no campus parties, everyone spends their time at dingy bars.

- I know too many people there already.

- Would be too depressed to actually do any work.

So any suggestions?

Go with A man, seems like you'd be happier with A. Life is too short to have that many minuses that can be avoided. You can also have all the space you want away from family, and that in itself is reason to pick it

I would personally do half and half if the programs are compatible enough to easily transfer ...

As long as your grades remain solid, you can (effectively) cut the cost of your education in half while still getting the respect from graduating from a better school by taking your first 2 years at school B and finishing your education at school A. This is (generally) what I advise people to do anyways ...

School B -- Full ride.

*unless School B is a junior college*

Prestige is gone from the university, ergo a degree from ANY UNIVERSITY is transferable (and marketable).

Learn this life lesson, and learn it well: take the money and run.

I don't know how things are in the US, but here you can rent "cheap" rooms to stay during the whole semester. We call it a "kot", but those other Dutch people call it a "studentenkamer".

I live only 40 minutes away from my university by train and I stay at a "kot". But that's mostly because I hate Belgian trains. They're a living nightmare.

So, I'd chose for option A, but then again, things are totally different in the USA then in my country, so I don't know how much it will cost you.

Mmm, i would go to School B and would be living an awesome life with the money i would save.

I rather have less academic work and leverate it with "real work", everything cant be taugh in a classroom and the "real work" is waaaaaaaaaay to diferent that you were told.

Can you financially support yourself for School A?

Kimi wa ne tashika ni ano toki watashi no soba ni ita

Itsudatte itsudatte itsudatte

Sugu yoko de waratteita

Nakushitemo torimodosu kimi wo

I will never leave you

School A, Duh. You don't want your parents that close to checkup on you constantly when you're in college, it takes away the sense of freedom and exploration that university life offers. Which is a time period you'll never get to re-experience because once you're out you start having to pay all the bills (though you said your parents won't pay for that school anyways so it might not be as good as it could be.)

i would choose school b, but that just because i always try to avoid dept like the plague :b

EDIT: could you maybe try going to some cheapass community college for 2 years and work to save money for that fancy university?
