Forums - Sony Discussion - Rumor: PSN+ subscription details

I don't think we will have to pay for cross game chat, they made it sound like it would only be an early acces. (a beta/demo)

I don't see the problem with making x-game voice chat a premium feature. It's a feature that's absolutely not essential to good online gaming. Want to chat with your friends who are playing different games? Pay up, otherwise enjoy the continued free online. I guess it would be nice in Demon's Souls where there's no in game voice chat, but frankly using voice chat in DS would be cheating :P.

PSN is at a good level feature wise already, making money off people who want these extra features is a good idea so long as the core experience remains free and isn't eroded. If you want an example of what not to do, look at XBL Silver.

Unfortunately, eventually all these services are going to require pay-to-play.

If that happens though, one would hope the servers would remain up. There is nothing worse than charging for access to something that does not exist.

Do you mean in the form of EA shutting down servers or like the original Xbox games' matchmaking servers?

If the developer is providing the servers (like EA), there is no guarantee.  If they use the standard matchmaking servers they should last as long as they are relevant.  Halo 2 matchmaking was available for over 4 years after the next generation started which seems very good in my opinion.  The only reason it was shut down was because of incompatibilities with the newer XBL system and games.  If XBL is not too drastically changed from this generation to the next the matchmaking servers for games like CoD, Gears of War, Halo 3, etc could stay on much longer.

Right company. Wrong reference.

My thought was about EA shutting down servers for games only about two years old from THIS generation. http://www.mcvuk.com/news/36994/EA-to-shut-down-old-game-servers

Such an action becomes even more of an issue when EA starts charging a one-time fee for purchasers on the secondary (used) markets to access these game features.

I wonder if they will slowly scale back the free option to induce more people to pay to play so to speak. What if they remove the ability to play games online unless you bought it new OR subscribe to the service for instance? Technically it would still be free but only if you buy new for example.

squll thats a very good idea to combat pre-owned sales.

stop online play for pre-owned games.

Depending on the price, I might bite for cloud saving (fuck yesssssss!) and the protection plan alone.

This.

But fuck cross game voice chat being PSN+ exclusive.  Way to split up the community.

But dammit, you know we're gonna use it!

Guys, the article speculates $9.99 a month, but keep in mind that MS used to charge $9.99 for their 1-month XBL cards when available and they still charge $19.99 for 3-month cards (roughly equaling $80 for a year's worth).

If PSN+ *is* $9.99 a month, it'd probably be cheaper in bulk, just like most other subscription based services.

The only thing that I think is bullshit here is that they seem to be making you pay for services that theoretically cost almost nothing to support (cross game voice chat - it shouldn't cost you anything to transfer audio information to a friend via your own bandwidth). This is the same issue with MS charging for P2P online play.

ADD google tv in it and i ll bite ;)

Too expensive! Thats gonna equal around £100, no way im i paying that

I agree. I hate paying $7 per month for Xbox, but $10 on PSN???? I know its optional but still...

Before people were saying "Ill never pay for online" and "$50 a year is too much" and now its "you got my money sony" and "good job sony"..

Granted You must pay to play online for xbox, but still, What happened to your never gonna pay?

The difference is that you're not paying to play online.

If you look at it, this is nothing like Xbox Live Gold. Did you read the article?

This is assuming the article is true, which we do have to assume if we assume that $10/month is the real price.

Yeah i konw its nothing like XBL, But people swore up and down they wont pay. So does that mean Paying for XBL is fine now? I know online is still free for PSN but your still paying, additional features or not. Just like Gold has additional features that silver doesnt, your still paying.

and Free online gaming > XBLG

i don't get this...

you know that this is nothing like xbl and that people "swore up and down" that they woudn't pay FOR ONLINE GAMING. so what is being argued here?

psn+ isn't required for online gaming. it's an added service like paying for a warranty. not buying the warranty won't make your purchase any worse (like not buying xbl).

If it's priced right for what it offers, I'm in.
