Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: PSP2 will be a download-only!!!

What if 3DS is download-only too? The leap to DD would benefit both companies.

OK this could work or fail again all depending on how Sony handles it.( unfortunately I have little faith in Sony on this). If they can make a PSP2 cheap(sub $200) on release, this time around all games would be available on the store, the online store is actually managed properly with discounts, sales and a wide variety of games from $5 to full price. Personally I don't think Sony could pull this off at the moment, and I still think people aren't really ready for a d-load only gaming handheld and they might never be thanks to iPod/iPhone.

lol about the market not being ready. 95% of psp games are digital (piracy anyone?) thats why games re selling like crap. if they can make at least 5 dollars for each game $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Download only doesn't bother me. It hasn't hurt the Ipod/Ipad/Iphone. But if it's not a phone also that directly competes with the iphone, then seriously, what's the point?

It's not going to bomb. It's just that SONY is changing PSP's demographics. From gamers going to the smartphone users.PSP2 can be a great smartphone/media player with the addition of games but a mediocre handheld.

Well,I hope they at least release a 2analog stick PSP...

i think it's pretty much the trend i see them taking esp. with SE smart phone's being able to sync up to the PS3 it's going to be interesting to see sony's development into the handheld market and getting more away from just one dedicated device to multiple Handhelds that have the PSP functionality add to them.

Without having the physical retail market this could be disastrous.

Apple gets away with it, because they have their own distribution channels and stores where people can buy their own equipment.  Sony would need this to be comparible.  Also, what the heck do they mean they were the first and blaze a new trail?  If they keep this up, they will end up also saying Move was the first to, discounting the Wiimote.

Why do people insist on physical media in a handheld? Do people use their brains at all anymore? Go return a PSP game after 3 weeks and see what you get for it. Gamestop will maybe give you $10, on ebay you may get $15. Who is that hard up? Secondly, if you are only going to keep something for a month go rent it 1 time. It's about 5 dollars to rent a game at most video stores, and they have any late fees, plus that is way less than buying and selling games.

But I don't have fast, any, enough internet/bandwidth. There are free wifi locations all over the place. If you can't drive to find a spot to download games, you won't be able to drive to buy a physical copy either.

I could go on for days about the many advantages of digital media versus physical media on a mobile device, but it would be worthless, because people have lost all common sense.

Retailers use content sales to justify carrying game systems.  If Sony pulls any way for retailers to make money off of content, why would they support carrying the PSP system?  That is the issue here facing Sony.  Unless Sony also shows retailers that it can top the 3DS, and be the top handheld, why would retailers back it... because Sony says "No TVs for you", or they like the name Sony?

Ok, maybe Sony provides kiosks where people can come in and get games and download them, and the retailer gets a cut.  Then MAYBE Sony has a shot here.

Anyone that thinks that Sony would not make major changes to the way they deliver digital content if they made an all digital platform, needs to die right now. I am so sick of people having zero concept of change.

Humanity, is making it extreamly hard for me to believe in evolution when we have the same dumb crap going around and around. Stop, and think for 10 minutes about things. Research, and understand what is being presented to you. Make hypothisis of what it could be, and find what would be needed to make something work. Try to determine whether something from one segment already solves a problem that an advancment in another would present.

What could Sony change if they went to an all digital PSP?

-Every store that sells the unit must have a kiosk to allow people to obtain the content.
-Uses the rental service for PSN movies to allow people to rent games.
-Allow people to give up their rights to a game in return for $5 - 10 towards their PSN account.
-Subscription service were you can play all the games you want, as long as you pay the monthly premium.

Why do prices not go down for digital content?

-Sony still has to create the content which is the biggest cost.
-They have to run many servers to distrabute the content (in this case the kiosks would also add to the cost).
-Shipping charges go away, but bandwidth charges apply instead.
-They have to hold an account for every person so that people can have access to their entire library. This way you never have to worry about lost or damaged games.

Please stop and think about this beyond today, and beyond how it effects you. Things have to be looked at from more than one angle when change is occuring. We as a society need not to look at change for a way of how bad they are, but ask what will these changes do to make life better for me, and all others involved. Instead of saying this will not work because of this PERIOD. Ask how will this work with this in the way. Hopefully I am getting the idea acoss.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

This won't happen as Nintendo already stated that the 3DS is backwards-compatible. So it has a slot, at least for DS/DSi games. Not sure if new 3DS games will use the same slot, though.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.
