Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: PSP2 will be a download-only!!!

PSP2 will be a download-only device similar to PSP go, if comments by Sony Computer Entertainment Australia are anything to go by.

Speaking to Gamespot in the interview you can find below, SCEA boss Michael Ephraim said clearly the future PSP hardware will follow PSP go’s example in dropping physical retail games.

“PSP go… was the first device of its kind, where you didn’t have packaged goods or pre-recorded media, and I think PSP go will blaze the trail for future iterations of the handheld,” he said.

Ephraim went on to say PSP is competing not only with other games devices but with phones.

“The handheld space is very crowded, not just in the game category, but also with smart phones and so on,” he said.

“We’re happy we launched it so we can understand the market and we will re-energise sales very shortly with new promotions.”

PSP2 has already been hotly rumoured to be download-only, and there have been hints the device will include a 3G connection. A powerful gaming device with a touchscreen, speaker, microphone and a 3G connection: can’t see where this is going.

The next PSP is tipped for a 2011 ship. Should start taking bets on whether or not O2 gets the UK exclusive.

Without having the physical retail market this could be disastrous.

If they do this they can say goodbye to Japan almost completely, the market is built off of the used market. You can't just have download only, it's gonna fail so badly.
Won't do much better in the west either, the market isn't even close to being ready for that and many aren't even gonna want it.

that said this isn't confirmation, it kinda sounds like it might be that way but he doesn't specifically say PSP2 will be download only.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Well if that's the case. It already bombed.

Download only usually leads to lower quality games.

It's not going to bomb.It's just that SONY is changing PSP's demographics.From gamers going to the smartphone users.PSP2 can be a great smartphone/media player with the addition of games but a mediocre handheld.

Well,I hope they at least release a 2analog stick PSP...

Heh, looks like DS will have a large handful of the handheld marketshare next gen. :)

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
Can Sony really compete directly with Apple and the rest of the highly competitive phone market? I don’t’ think the PSP brand is strong enough yet for that.
So..
Sony have learnt nothing?
