Better question, would I be a bad person if I took my lawn chair and a cooler of beer went to the park and spent the afternoon watching the high school girls soccer team practice?

You are horrible.

You probably buy used cars too. *gasp*

A majority of used car sales are handled by official dealerships, thus car manufacturers still get a cut of the profit I believe.  I could be wrong though, given the way dealerships are franchised.

Either way, the car and video game used markets are hardly comparable.

Yeah.  They sometimes get a profit if you buy it from a dealership.

If you buy the car directly from it's owner though, that's true not at all.

If you buy the car directly from it's owner though, that's true not at all.

I was moreso comparing the business of trading in and reselling used products in either market.  Dealerships and places like GameStop make up the bulk of used sales in both markets, only in the former case the car manufacturers still get a cut of the money, thus used car sales don't have nearly as bad an impact on the manufacturers as used sales do on video game publishers, which is why you don't really hear whining about used sales in that market (or any market outside of video games).

I have no problem with the concept of used sales, but the GameStop machine is hurting the industry, and it's gotten to a point where I feel that anybody that buys used is adding to the problem.  Even then, I don't have a problem with, say, getting a good deal from a friend, but I'm not cool with people who actively buy used games just to save 5-10 bucks.

Of course you're not. And the developers should stop whinning. I bought a new copy of Final Fantasy XIII, because I wanted to support them for putting so much effort in one game, but I got a used one for Golden Axe and Lair, since they both flopped and by buying them I wouldn't help them at all. Support anyone you want and don't feel bad about it.
Even indie games like Torchlight get decent sales, when the customers appreciate the effort. My advice: buy only old used games and only when you save much money. Getting a used game for $55 is a total rip-off.
Besides you are helping the industry in general, since many gamers sell their old games to buy new ones. I know a lot of people who sold 1 or 2 used games to get Yakuza 3 or MW:2. And the argument that this is worse than piracy is not necessarily valid. I bought a used copy of Folklore a few ago just because I thought that since it's very cheap I might as well give it a try, but the game was never on my wish list.

You can't blame people for buying second hand games. They do nothing illegal or immoral. The problem (if there even is one), is GameStop. Address all your anger to them, I say.

People who are angry with customers who buy 2nd handed games are irrational idiots.

I did.  I got fed up with their policies (plus some other issues) and thus no longer do.

I may make a rant thread about it at some point.
