Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Alan Wake impressions

So I finished the first 2 episodes last night.  So far this game is amazing.  It tells a great story that sucks you in and has all the perfect "scare" moments to fit the horror/thriller vibe.

I'll run down the positives/negatives now.

Possitive:

  • Superb voice acting so far
  • The best graphics and effects in a dark environment yet
  • Very good scripting and story telling
  • Thrills and scares are perfect to keep you on edge and not give you too much of a fright that you can't keep going

Negatives:

  • Some of the animations are a bit janky... like the mouths and cars driving in cutscenes
  • While I said the dark setting graphics are literally the best I've seen on console, the graphics of daytime settings and in daytime cutscenes seem rather weak in comparison.  I saw quite a bit of pixelation in the earlier daytime cutscenes, objects/textures popping in and out, cars would stutter while driving, and even in gameplay during the day I saw a bit of screen tearing and blurriness.

So far the cut scenes seem to have improved quite a bit in quality as well as the rest of the graphics.  This game really thrives on the story which so far is a complete mystery and horror story all in one.  I am really loving playing out this nightmare.  Based on the story alone, this game is magnificent, however the graphics on my 1080p just don't seem to look the best.  Some of the details on the characters (like face and facial animations) I have seen much better in Mass Effect 2 or Gears 2, as well as daytime environments/graphics.

Alan Wake does have without a doubt in my mind the best night time/dark settings with fog, smoke, mist, and weather effects (like the tornado things) that I have ever seen on console.  This is a good thing since the majority of the game I have played so far has been in these darker settings.

Can't wait to finish it!!!

I have finished it. So I wont talk to much. But from the end of Episode 2 onwards, it's seriously engrossing. You wont put it down till you finsih it. Episode 4 has an amzing set piece in it. Pure genius. I also found that the beginning of the game had more tech issues than anywhere else. Wierd. But I also agree, after Episode 1, the graphics seemed to get better and better. Wait till Episode 5. OMG, you will lose yourself in this game.

The end is Epic. And I cant wait for the next Episode on June 27. OF which I have a free code for as I have Limited Collectors Edition.

Episode 3 also shows the daytime scenes looking amazing. You satnd atop a huge hill, and can look for miles in any direction. When you see this rendered, you realsie why some textures are noteably lower. Hundreds of trees, Rivers, environment. You'll see what I mean in Episode 3.

EDIT:

I also agree with animations. Although I would say the only animation that is clunky is the climb up edge or drop down ones. Everything else is pretty damn awesome. Both in gameplay and in cutscenes. Some of the cutscene animations are some of the best you'll see. Barry is amazing in these. As is Alan himslef. Remedy already have updates coming with the first DLC. They have confirmed facial animations and ploy count is already upped for that. But the rest they said will be later. After 30% extra from the 360 with the engine is what they claimed they already have. You can do quite a bit more with that.

Thanks for the heads up!  I also love how the manuscript pages help by filling in gaps, sometimes going over stuff you have already encountered, and sometimes telling you about stuff in the future.

And I think everyone gets the first DLC for free no matter what version they bought (provided they bought new).  I know I got a code for it in the standard edition.

Ah, woops. LOL. I assumed it was only LCE. LOL.

Also I edited my other post. ;)

This is my first game since fifa '10, so it has been a long time since I bought a game. I had high expectations for this game. I'm following its production since the E3 announcement '05 or 06. Their have been a lot of games that I really liked like Prey, Lost Odyssey and blue dragon which have been underrated and deserved a lot more attention according to me. With Alan Wake I hope it won't be the same because I want more Episodes. And as long as they can offer good episodes I won't put it on the 2nd hands market. For that reason I think their won't be a big market for the 2nd hands version of the game. SO PEOPLE BUY THIS GAME!!!

I'm now starting with the last episode. I really like the game. The game contains some unforgettable moments and the production quality of this game is excellent! The longer I'm playing it, the more I enjoy it. The slowest part, for me, is episode 2.5 until 3.5 after that the story goes as a rollercoaster!

The gameplay is easy to pick up but I hope they put some upgrades for the flash lights or weapons in the upcoming episodes.
The cinematics and visuals are beautiful. Except of some daylight parts where i found some "framedropping" but nothing annoying or something that will hurt the gameplay. It even never occurred during a battle!
The way how the story is told is a big plus for the hardcore players they have made the manuscripts. And for the more casual player they have the resumé of the story at the beginning of every episode.

And please people don't get to much influenced by people that are saying it isn't a AAA title because for me it is!
