Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony starting to push against used games

Hey guys,

I did not find a thread for this but I think this is very interesting. The modnation Racers game on the PSP will be the first game that will be limited when you buy it used.

You have to register your game online and use a certain code to unlock the multiplayer, which is probably the best mode for this game. This code can only be used ONCE. So you played your game for two weeks, tried the multiplayer (PSN stuff) and used the code for it, but did not get into the game and you decide to sell it. The guy buying the game has to go to the PSN store and BUY a new code to unlock the multiplayer for $10.

This will be the frst Sony game to have this feature. It is VERY likely that future games will have a similar feature. So watch out when you buy a Sony game used.

The idea come from EA originally but I don't know which games use this stuff already. THQ decided to do the same, but their multiplayer code is "just" $5.

What do you think about this development?

this isnt the first game that does this... this type of thing was done in I think MLB or some shooter a few months back. am i one of the few people on this site that keeps up with all forms of the latest video game news?

And truly, this is a great idea. Makes publishers and developers money no matter if someone buys new or used games. And anyone who complains really needs to realize that servers cost money to keep running so buying a used game normally doesnt give a developer any sort of incentive to keep their multiplayer servers running.

A way to kill the game market.

Im not going to spend $60 on every fucking game i want to play, especally if its shit.

I rented over 100 games on Xbox, and iv only bought maybe 5 of them. If i cant rent games that i can full play (no bullshit $5 to play online) then im done with Consoles, ill take my ass and go back to PC, you can call me Shio number 2!

The correct way to combat used games is to offer a free incentive, like EA is doing with Bad Company 2. I bought the game new for $60 even though i already had the code (got a spare code from a friend) but i still bought it new just to support DICE. If you offer free DLC with new games then people will buy them as long as the DLC is worth it.

Another option is what EA is doing with BF Heroes, instead of it being free, sell the game for $30 and sell it in stores, but make it where you can buy new constums and new guns for $0.99 each,People LOVE to buy stuff, i know i would spend another $5 for additional L4D2 outfits or even to play as L4D1 cast. You can sell a game through Digal Download for $20 on consoles but as long as you have stuff to buy people will buy it.

The minute major companys start taking away multiplayer functions from rented games, im done with console gaming. Its getting way to expensive to properly enjoy games. Steam is the future if they start this bullshit.

This sorta thing has been happening on the PC for years now.

Free games or cheap games with DLC? Yep it has and thats why Consoles should follow suit.

really what i am curous about is what if you switch systems after a hard drive crash.
If you buy the guy legit, you should be able to use it's functions.
i am not a fan of any of the drm or newer restrictions that make you effectively own less of a game.
IF you could buy a code for a buck or two I would mind it a lot less.

call Sony, they will transfer licenses to the new system.

I hope the games that implement this fall flat on their faces so hard that they turn away from the idea of it ever again. I'm fine with offering free extras to people who buy new, but MULTIPLAYER is not an "extra".

Multiplayer is a SERVICE that NEEDS FUNDING in order to KEEP MULTIPLAYER RUNNING. If devs DONT get PAID kiss multiplayer GOODBYE a FEW MONTHS after release.

This only holds true for online multiplayer - am I to understand that this version of MNR doesn't have local multiplayer, or are you suggesting that local multiplayer is a "service" too?

support your developers and publishers. the retailers will get paid either way.

Developers that makes gams that people get tired of and sell are not worth supporting.

I believe they're using the word "multiplayer" in lieu of "online multiplayer".  Every game that has used this tactic thus far has only limited online multiplayer (EA's games, UFC, Socom).

That being said, given it's a PSP game, local multiplayer is essentially online multiplayer with ever so slight alterations to allow for adhoc play, so it may be that both are disabled within ModNation Racers as a result.

That changes absolutely nothing about my initial statement, then.

Online multiplayer for non-subscription services is presumably aid for by a combination of a sustainable hosting model and sales of the game in question. ssj12 suggests that used game sales put a greater pressure on game developers. This is hogwash.

Presumably when you buy a game you are effectively buying into support for it for as long as your copy exists. When you trade in a used game and it's bought by someone else, developers aren't supporting two copies, they're supporting the one copy they were already paid for.

Again, this model is ridiculous and I hope it results in badly reduced software sales.
