Forums - Sales Discussion - Alan Wake's Low European Debut (88K) - Will it make a profit?

It's hard to say how much was Alan Wake hyped outside of these boards, here everyone and his grandma knew from selnor that AW is "the SH!T". If the whole hardcore gaming base was hyped similary and than the shit hit the fan with 82 metacritic and outdated scheme after 5 years in making and beeing hyped for half a year... might've hurt.

But let's see next week, beeing released with Red Dead (better game, larger audience) isn't going to help it's sales. Maybe watch the legs, I was kinda expecting huge opening week like with Heavy Rain or Splinter Cell, but legs might be where it's at. But if not, that this is really bad for Remedy. On the other hand, poor sales may force them to release this on the PC also, which wouldn't be half bad for some gamers. (I can't play horrors, too damn scary :)

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

I didn't expect sales to be this low. That said it didn't receive much marketing, but for a title in development for 5. Its one of the best games I have played in its genre, I hope it makes a profit.

this game was hyped to be up to uncharted standards by certain fans, yet it was not, not only that it has not even sold as well as uncharted did, now if we are going by fan idiology it is even more of a flop than uncharted 1 was, so expect a pc version very very soon

Remedy need the game to make a profit, their studio's future is resting on it.

I'm surprised by it's low debut, I thought it would at least sell 150k+ in others first week. Both SC and AW have been commercially and critically a bit of a letdown in my mind, and I think Mod Nation Racers may be next.

Not that every game needs to get perfect scores, or that metacritic is the ultimate yardstick of quality, but scores in the low 80's for exclusives a long time in the works from studios with a strong pedigree is dissapointing.

It would be an awful shame for Remedy to get into financial problems, so hopefully the game will have legs.

Splinter Cell Conviction is on track to be the highest selling Splinter Cell on an Xbox product.

At the same time, I can see you're point critically, a lot of people (in the case of Alan Wake, myself included) expected them to be AAA.

I wouldn't worry about the game losing money.  It was in production for a long time yes, but with an EXTREMELY small development team.  This isn't Killzone 2.

Alan Wake wasn't funded like Killzone 2 was by their publisher. Remedy funded the project by themselves, their an independent developer with about 50 people on staff for about 5 year's. That's not going to be cheap. Killzone 2 is a first party studio with 130 employee's with the full backing of Sony, they took a year less time to release their game and it sold well over 2 million copies (half of that within it's first month of release), they more than likely made a profit.

I don't know if Microsoft may have funded them in the later part of development, but I'm just going by what they we're saying like 3 year's ago when they wanted to fund the project themselves so they could have 'creative freedom'.

Off Topic: Your sig is out of date, Xbox 360: 29 and PS3: 25.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

its a shame, Im still to get this game though

This game should have been multiplatform, where the fanbase is spread across.

Who is surprised here ?

This game was overhyped on the whole internet because it was supposed to be the "BEST GAME EVA", the BEST GFX EVA, the best survival horror game that is so good that you DO NOT HAVE the right to call it a survival horror game (thx you Remedy for this last point)

also, the game has no online multiplayer which seems to be more and more important for gamers today ...

It is released close to RDR which is getting high praising

AND the pre-orders where showing us since numerous weeks that game will not have amazing sales.

Conclusion : plz port the game to PC and I will buy it. Thx you Remedy.

Were not talking about the following gamese

  • Uncharted 1/2
  • LBP
  • R2 (Remember that guy who said Its the best looking game of 2008? LOL!)
  • MGS4
  • Selnor
  • Westley Yin-Poole (He said Crysis 2 on 360 was better than PC crysis LOL!!!)
  • GT5
  • GoW3
  • Gears 3

But this game is incredible, The graphics are mind blowing.

Since when were these "overhyped" ?

There was that stupid "HUGE" Bullshit going around when LBP was gonna come out, it was supposed to move millions of playstations and sell a million first day.

GT5 is supposed to be the saving god of the PS3 for some reason, people are hyping it up like it was just announced.

UC1/2 is the best game ever cus its only on the PS3 and the graphics are amazing and anyone who gives it less than a 100 are Xbots.

GoW3 has amazing graphics and can only be done on the PS3 and blah blah blah. We get it the game is good no need to over hype everything.

Dude, how is this even relevant here ? its way off-topic.

These games were hyped, yes..because they are amazing games...

UC2, GoW 3, LBP all are 90+ on meta and overall fan reaction has been extremely positive, unlike games like GTA IV which received a lot of meh reactions from fans.

Why exactly is GoW 3 over-hyped ? It delivered on everything it promised imo, you haven't even played ANY GoW game and you label it over-hyped... Why ? And what position are you in to say that it is..

If my memory serves me correctly, you are the same guy who said Uncharted 2's graphics were average and the textures were bad. You also said Dante's Inferno had a better story than GoW despite not playing GoW.

You continuously say these type of things which you aren't in any position to say and get away with it....

On topic though,

Games like Alan Wake, inFamous and all which were pretty hyped and didn't get the review scores as fans expected are still awesome enough for some, but not so for others.

AW sales are mildly disappointing, yes. ioi expects about 150k from America first week...so around 250k Worldwide isn't bad and it will eventually get to a million...or even more if it has insane legs. Which is brilliant for a horror/thriller title that isn't Resident Evil.

I don't understand why everyone believes this game will have legs in others. Look at the top 50 4 games with legs Modern Warfare 2, Battlefield 2 both shooters and extremely popular franchises. The other two Halo ODST and Forza 3 were bundled games thus explaining their legs. If the game lasts beyond week 8 in the others top 50 I will be shocked.

I think it's going to sell like Darksiders http://www.vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=25779&region=All , but about 40% better. And have a similar sales difference between Others and USA.

I think to be decently profitable it really needed to be multiplat (i.e. on PC). Perhaps MS and Remedy over-estimated its appeal on 360 alone. I can't believe they got 4 years down the track on 360+PC development and then decided to ditch PC because it was too hard. The call must have come from somewhere on high that the game had to be 360 exclusive for reasons other than technical / development issues. I think MS wants more games that are genuinely exclusive to 360 and not the faux "console exclusive".

I just hope MS stumped up with a bit of cash for Remedy to compensate for wasted development time and lost PC sales.

I agree.  I'd go a little further though and state that with something like Alan Wake I'd go fully mutli-platform and cover PC, 360 and PS3.  I know Remedy are small, but Alan Wake occupies a genre that I believe needs as many purchases as possible vs being able to comfortably exist on one platform.

It might make a decent profit in the end, and hopefully MS did assist Remedy with costs as I'm sure they influenced the platform choice, but the game is very good (IMHO having got about half way through if I judge correctly) and I think in this case being exclusive with minimal advertising (so far as I've seen) really isn't the best scenario for it.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

did you hear about selnor? i guess not. aw was overhyped on vgc all the people who overhyped it admited it, their were countless threads about the games graphics. their was a thread which listed the quote for "best graphics" their was a thread for a metacritic score, a thread for every new screen shot, a thread for the 1st and 2nd review given out, and other threads for its graphics.

uncharted 2 and gow3 werent overhyped, if they were new ips then they would be overhyped but they got the correct amount of hype two big franchises on the ps3 had. their were many threads about gameplay and the great graphics, but that was after the games came out not two months before!

GT is the biggest franchise on playstation, gt5 has been 5 games in the making for a game of its caliber its not overhyped, halo 3 was hyped as the 2nd coming of christ but for halo its not overhyped.

yes many people talked about those games saying that they are the best games and that the xbox can't handle those games. ive heard people say that halo is the greatest game of all time. does it mean that it was overhyped? no theirs something called fanboys.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

I bought RDR and Alan Wake on the 18th, I love RDR, I have to say I am very Disappointed with Alan Wake, It gets so boaring burning the darkness off of these guys then shooting them, so repedative, and way to much story telling, I was hoping for a much better game, I mean 6 years in development, WOW, and Graphics were Average also. I really don't expect high sales for this game.
