its 2 strikes and your out in the gaming biz. If sony does poorly with the next one they're gone. I also EXTREMELY doubt the ps3 will be around as long as the ps2 for 2 reasons: technology is way better than it was then so its easier to whip out a new one and second, the ps2 was extremely successful, the ps3 was a flop.

This.  I wouldn't call the PS3 a flop though, as it has sold more than any last place console so far.  I would merely say that the 10 year plan only applies if you have the leading console in sales.  It's the retailers that control the lifespan of the consoles.  If they can still sell tons of software without sacrificing shelf space, they'll do it.  This is why they keep the top console from the previous gen for a few years into the new generation, because it has the most software selling potential.

that's not true In my opinion at all. you would not have to be #1 to get support for 10 year's for a product.

the fact that the Company such as Sony does support their hardware over time even if the hardware in the market is not # 1.

anyway

"it's the demand for the system" that will keep it on the shelf.  If the system is still in high demand than it will still keep selling! the PS3 may be the last place system, but that demand for the playstation 3 has increased.

the other factor is it's not even at a Low price yet. even when the new system's get released, the demand for the PS3 would have to dry up to the point that the store's could no longer sell the system. in my opinion the PS3 is no way near trending to that point. Nor do i see it trending anywhere near that even in the next couple of year's.

Actually it is the retailers.  I'll go into more detail:

Retailers have space for only a certain amount of consoles, handhelds, and all their games.  When new hardware comes out, it usually takes over the space of the predecessor (maybe not the whole space right away, but after a year or so it completely takes over).  This is because there is not enough space to keep the old consoles and games along with the new ones.  Retailers tend to keep the top selling console from the previous gen in order to continue to maximize on software sales.  This is because the new consoles will not be selling as much software for the first year or 2 until the install base increases.

There is simply not enough shelf space to support keeping 2 or 3 more consoles at retail.  It doesn't matter how long Sony or MS or Nintendo pledge to support their consoles as the retailers are the ones that will decide and with the Wii being both the top seller and the top software seller, it is likely to be the only one kept on more than a year or 2 after the next generation starts.

even if they take shelf space the fact is if the consumer "damand's" more of the product store's will not put the product that's in demand less shelf space. what your trying to do is paint that the PS3 not being in first place has to be the #1 spot to get that demand for the stores to keep its shelf space viable. and that was exactly what was stated back in 2007 and 2008 that demand for the PS3 would further erode it's shelf space. which here we are at 2010 and the PS3 has just as much shelf space if not more now.

the demand for the PS3 has increased not slowed!

Do you think the demand for the PS3 is going to vastly shrink in the next couple of year's? when the PS3's price is yet to be at the sub $200.00 sales sku. we have no I dea how it would go in the next couple of year's, but for my guess I see no trend of the PS3's demand drying up where it would start to sell less and less software, not the way the 1st party and 2nd party have been putting out quality Game's for the PS3.

The consumer demands the Wii the most, therefore it is the one that the retailers will keep.  The demand for the others will slow down drastically after their successors release.  It doesn't matter about the rest.  The shelf space just won't allow for it and the retailers will decide to go with the newer consoles because the future software will be higher.  Again, only the Wii stands a chance at lasting more than a year or 2 after next gen starts.

10 year plan is just puffery.

simply put yes. its for the same reason they released a PS3 when PS2 was still selling more than the wii. at the end of the day even if they lost money on PS3 they still have a point to
prove next gen by beatting the competitoin. and they can't do it with 7th gen hardware(even thouhg PS3 will still be viable and maybe even PS2).

on that note. all three will be out in force next gen. laugnch titles will be at there peak, and the big three will battle hard for those gamers that are in between. they haft to prove everything that happened this gen was a fluk, and that PS4 realy can do everything and atrack all gamers no matter what they buy the other consoles for.

but the hard part will be bringging those casual gamers to the 8th gen! it can be done, but who will do it best?

i would say there is very little chance. alot god opf war 3will make huge amounts of profit lol but give it some time on the basis of it sales compared to gpw2 it could easily reach 4 mill which is profit granteed

PS3 will and wii might be the only 2 on the market at this time. i don't think nintendo will won't to support two consoles. when demand dips below a sertant nunber they will disscontinue the wii and let supply dry up.

Really? REALLY?

I could understand these threads when the PS3 was lagging behind in sales. When software consistently got miserable sales. When it looked unlikely that the PS3 would even cross 40 million.

But when it's in second place, the software is starting to pick up, and the hardware is profitable, NOW you want Sony to leave the console business?

In case you didn't realise, this is a painfully overdone thread subject.

Sony dont need PS4 because there is just no reason for them to make PS4. Not just Sony but the whole gaming industry. Sony had done so much to keep PS3 alive and gaining momentum over its competitor. Now its time for them to get some profit from PS3 (Sony just announced they finally turn PS3 per unit profit. Sony loss so much because they want gain marketshare and keep on same pace as X360. If they only think about ptofit and selling PS3 at $400+ and did not invest in new IP (like what Nintendo did to Gamecube) they will be profitable but Sony will be permanently lose all their fans and effect in long term.

If Sony keep PS3 price until mid next year i'm sure they will gain some profit. PS3 game also had higher attach rate lately thanks to blu ray for being unhackable. Also i dont see we need next gen console as HD games is still too expensive for game developer. The earliest i think is around 2015 . Graphic still can be improved and most PS3 games released not even use half of Blu Ray capacity. x360 always use multiple disc. PS Move and Natal still not released. 3D also supported by PS3 and X360. There is no reason for Sony or Microsoft to introduce next gen console this time. None of game developer will like it as it will boost production cost and might destroy the whole industry. Nintendo on other hand might upgrade Wii into Wii HD just to compete with PS3/X360.

Yes because Nintendo has no common sense?  Seriously, the Wii will still be the top of the sales in both hardware and software.  Nintendo will support it as long as the retailers keep it in order to maximize their own profits.

If anything the next console to be kept around would be 360, then PS3 last, but it will probably just be the Wii.  Retailers have all the control.

How do you know?

just because the Wii sell the most system's does not mean the damand for the other system's will be so little that it would not be viable for the store's to keep stock of the hardware. just because your not #1 does not mean you cannot keep support for your product.

we are not even near that point yet. to many right now Even with the Wii being first, the current system's are still too new in their market's.

think about this sofar the system's out now can be updated to new function's and application's on the fact that they are less static , will mean less and less people will purchase the new hardware right from the get go , unless there is something that make's it a much needed upgrade!

which even if the new system's get released the current system's would have to offer less overall function's vs' their future replacement that make's it more of an incentive to upgrade for the consumer's and than has to be at a price that refect's that upgradeability offer's more that the other system would be deemed too outdated.

when these new system's get released would they infact offer so much more function's right from the start and be priced with that upgrade in mind be view by the consumer that the current system would be so outdated that they would start to buy less and less software for the older system?

past trends i would tend to agree, but in this case this generation has one thing going for it that previous generation's did not have , at least on this scale, less static game system's which also mean's the future system sale's are going to suffer in their sales upfront but not later on.

the companies are less likely to be in a hurry to put out new system's than to stretch this generation out.

which many developer's are inclined to support these system's longer because of the upfront development cost's involved.

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner.  I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.

If the PS3 isn't profitable in it's lifetime I'd say they'll change the design of the PS4, maybe make it cheap and main-stream friendly.

But even if the PS3 isn't yet profitable, it's an important market share for sony, not just with games but also as a Blu-Ray player and 3D capabilities.

SCE isn't Domed, and aren't committing suicide, sorry to let you down OP.
