Sony: PSP "a disappointment" last year

Sony CFO Bill Glaser has called PSP sales "a little bit of a disappointment" for the huge electronics company.

He was speaking in a Sony earnings call this afternoon. His comments come after full-year FY2010 earnings (for the year ended 31st March) showed flagging PS2 and PSP sales.

"PS2 is entering its 11th year this year, and it's amazing it is still contributing," said Glaser. "PSP was a little bit of a disappointment to us last year."

The PSPgo has been a commercial flop for Sony, although some rumours suggest it was an experiment ahead of a PSP2. Digital Foundry explored the possibilities recently.

PS3 performed better for Sony, although its results Glaser said were "offset" by the other platforms.

Talking of other platforms, Glaser revealed that Sony was already pumping money to researching new key gaming hardware.

"We're always looking into future platforms as well. Very premature to talk about future platforms, but R&D is continuing," he said.

Don't get too excited: Sony has talked long of a 10-year PS3 plan. It will take more than a giant crab to change that.

I think this means there will finally be a price cut soon.

This ten year non-sense doesn't mean a new system isn't coming soon.

         Japan / West

PS1 - Fall 1994/ Fall 1995

PS2 - Spring 2000 / Fall 2000

PS3 - Nov 2006 (NA + Ja) / March 2007

They release a system every six years or so on average - we're due for a PSP2.

who wouldnt be dissappointed with those sales numbers....

First focus your console (specially handhelds) on gaming, not crappy movies, music or so. (You can't beat iPhone/iPod)

Second find games that could be sucessful in many markets and be recognized as handheld exclusives. Monster hunter is great for Japan but not for the rest of the world.

Third give your console a good online system.

Fourth PSPGo was a bad idea, just let it die.

I don't think anyone would be happy with those numbers and especially when the iPod Touch is becoming a big threat and when the DS is kickin it's ass completely each week (with the exception of JAP)

Right now the PSP has got great games coming out this year with massive games like Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, God of War Ghost of Sparta, Final Fantasy Agito XIII but really it needs more and a handful of games aren't gonna make a huge impact.

So that's why a PSP2 is needed with a low price, two analogue sticks, HD and loads of quality games.

PSP2 announced this year released this year?

PS4 announced in 2013 released in 2014

half right.

PSP2 will probably be mentioned at E3 with a fall release to match the 3DS.

However, as theSource mentioned above, 6 years for a launch of a new system and that when Sony was the market leader by massive amounts. There's no way a PS4 will be released AFTER 2012.

They NEED to cut the price of the PSP..

if not its really screwed..
