I DL'd Steam for my mac book pro but when i try to open the app it goes directly to updating the app.

it never finishes updating. it gets to a point and says that steam is not connected to the internet and that i need to confirm a network and begin the updates again..

my computer is connected online, i an serfing the web while its updating..

i dont understand please help (=

What worked for me is to open the application folders and then from there click on the steam icon and it should work

Have you dragged the Steam installation file into your applications folder, and then unmounted it so you can open it from your own applications folder? I forget to do that sometimes.
