Forums - Gaming Discussion - Favorite RPG this gen, and why?

I'm going to have to go with The World Ends With You.

I had pretty much given up hope of ever enjoying a JRPG again after a decade of disappointments, though I'll admit I didn't console game much, and I didn't delve deeply into the more obscure JRPGs (and SRPGs will always be a different matter ).

TWEWY was the breath of fresh air that made me believe in the genre again. The action was fun, the setting and story were unique (despite the use of a couple of cliches). It had honest-to-God character development and striking artwork. The gameplay was very customizable! You could manage the top screen or ignore it at your discretion, adjust the difficulty up and down and rewards would scale up and down, use the powers you like and forget the others.

Well... Having just completed Final Fantasy 13, I was expecting it to be one of the most amazing games ever... It wasnt... It was very good. So I must go with Lost Odyssey! Liked the story, Loved the combat and most of the charactors. It just felt great... Like a old school RPG. I am Hoping for a sequel, but who knows if we will see one.

i would say both Final Fantasy XIII because it made my jaw drop plenty of time because of the incredicle scenery it shows and also Persona 4. even though it was released on a last gen consol its still a hell of alot of fun

Awesome! I agree that the graphics were incredible. A shame that you couldn't interact with any of it though.

FFXIII graphics was a great illusion. Even though the scenery was great, it didn't change the fact that you were confined to walk a straight path throughout the whole game. There was the great scenery -then there was the yellow brick road which was the only thing you could walk on. As Leo-J said, "the game was on rails."

have to say ff 13 as it was the highest quality rpg this gen techically and i think the best when you look at it not as a final fantasy as you shouldnt because thats just a name different game each time so people should expect different things each time other wise what people dont seem to realise is that it would get boring

Somewhere between Valkyria Chronicles and Fallout 3 for me. Valkyria had such a rich and refreshing story though, one not often seen in a JRPG. Also the fact the game touched on so many differenct character types and issues(race/gender/orientation/spirituality).

excuse me? Are you serious? as long as the game carries the title Final Fantasy I will refer and compare it to previous titles of the series thank you very much.

You honestly think that downgrading the game into controlling one character and having a command window with an "Auto" option is a change for the better in the series? we might as well have great FPSs like Halo have auto lock-on mechanisms. I'm sure Halo fans would love that ~sarcasm

Final Fantasy is being simplified.

You violated the terms of the thread.

You don't have to be rude about your opinion of FF's simplification.
