Forums - Gaming Discussion - Final Fantasy - What Went Wrong!!

Final Fantasy used to be the standard of RPG excellence by which all games are judgded.  Then Square just lost its mind and starting adding all kinds of weird gimmicks and things they thought fans wanted. The video below explains my point in a more thorough fashion.

The video does not even cover FF13 which continues the asstacular performance of Square in making these games.  I just wish they could just tell a great story with grown-ups who dress in less emo outfits with a simple and intuitive battle system.

What are your thoughts? Does FF need a reboot?

Yes, FF needs to return to its roots. It's being hit-and-miss on games since about FF8, but staying to ones base can result in a strong and loyal fanbase; look at their own Dragon Quest series as an example. Regarding FF13, to FF standards, it's a miss. FF13 will be the worst selling mainline FF in Japan since FF4! The verdict on worldwide is still out, but it looks to definitely be in the lower half of sales in the Playstation era.

Not really fair to blame the game itself entirely for its sales, you need to consider the platform it's on. Even if the game were a "hit," it'd have trouble selling.

I'd like to have the great FF story and graphics with the Zelda gameplay.

What went wrong??

FF got "casualized".

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Hmm disagree, It's most likely going to outsell FFXI, and FFXII. FFX-2, thus it puts it in the middle, or lower half depending on how you count X-2 And I thought FFXIII game was one of the better ones in the series. And IMO the worst 3D ones are 7 and 12, still awesome games but. Not my favorite (I like FFVII, because crisis core was awesome, and CC would not be good with out FFVII)

However The internet complaining so I won't fail to aknowledge, the complaining is the same or more comparitively to when FFVIII came out, and FFXII atleast I think.

And On rebooting, final fantasy gets rebooted every numbered game. Including even sequals in the same universe as vs is an ARPG So that's going to happen anyways.

FFXII, had characters that were more mature and realistic, and less emo, and a different take on dialogue. and people complained about that as well.

they do need to improve the dialogue, however the dialogue has not gotten worse. IMO It just hasn't increased in quality at the same rate as other games. And when it went from reading to spoken, the dialogue is more noticiably bad when it's spoken as opposed to read. However I noticed how bad the dialogue was in the old ones and still loved them anyways, thus why X and XIII was not a shock.

This is all my opinion. I just didn't want to IMO after every sentence.

I haven't finished the old FFs (FF 1-6), but out of the newer ones FF 12 was the worst IMO. "The worst" does not mean that it's a bad game, it was still good, but nothing of it seemed great or awesome to me.

So... what went wrong?
Nothing IMO. Final Fantasy 13 is my favourite FF and one of my favourite games of all time, so... nothing went wrong for me.

2012 - Top 3 [so far]

                                                                             #1                                       #2                                      #3

FF13 hs sold 3 million in west so far & is showing better legs than FF12, FF12 did 2.4 Million in first 10 weeks in west & sld 70% in first 10 weeks. FF13 shud outsell FF8 in west which did 4 Million in west. It mite outsell FF10 in west.

FF13 is massive success in west and one of th best, so no it dusnt need reboot.
When franchise need reboot sales drop big, like wht hppnd to tomb raider, sonic, crash bandicoot. FF doesn't need a reboot, nt even close.

bt FF13 did flop in Jpn, but its luking to be one of the best sellin in the west. Take tht as u will.

EDIT: FF13 hs already outsold FF9 in the west & is 200K away from outselling FF12. All be4 its 10 weeks old.

If u wnt a reboot tell ppl to stop buyng the game.

i hated ff12 tho

IMHO

The series started to go wrong when it arrived on the Playstation, got worse on PS2 and then FFXIII is the pinacle of wrong decisions in a videogame.

FFVII, even though is an excellent game, it started the downfall of the series with the "standards" it set up with the use of FMV and cutscenes and the storyline. I started to have doubts when I played VIII and IX, because of the less focus on non game elements and more on movie ones.

FFX was, in my opinion, the worst FF game I played, because I expected more of the game after playing from I to IX. There was no overworld, little exploration, many cutscenes and heavy character development. I was so mad I lost faith in the series as a whole. I wont touch either FFXII nor FFXIII because I see more of the same I don't like.

The biggest problem of the series lies with the direction they are taking. More like CG movie developers and less Game developers with the high standards on graphics. Because if they want to go back to true RPG elements they will face a problem because the game might look worse than FFXIII if it goes to PS3.

maybe that promise will be fulfilled with FFXV on PS4. when it has an architecture similar to a HP proliant server with dual video cards :P

*kicks computer* I was typing up a nice long reply to this when it decided to hang, so I don't feel like redoing it all. I'll sum it up, though.

Look at the Japanese sales of system launch FF games to the system's install bases in Japan, and you will find ratios well over 50%. (This is true with FF4, 7, and 10.) Then look at FF13. It's going to struggle to reach that 50%, if it even does. It's not selling nearly as well even on an install base ratio. The difference between PS1 (the highest console install number) at FF7 launch and PS3 at FF13 launch is less than 1 million. So why, then, does it look like FF13 will be about a million behind FF10, and considerably more behind FF7. It can only mean that it is not selling as well, and this is irregardless of the system. Unless you're trying to say it would have sold better on the Wii, which I would dispute, because it was the PS era that made the game all about graphics and FMVs, something that the PS3 could do better, and the current targeted fanbase would expect.
