Yeah I feel you man. It's sad seeing self-proclaimed "hardcore" gamers place so much emphasis on hype and graphics. As if these are what makes a game "hardcore". It's quite sad. "Muramasa is a cutesy 2D animu game" and Kratos is some "badass motherfucker who has orgies and rips off peoples heads in HD!" so to the media-brainwashed "mature" "hardcore" gamer, Muramasa doesn't stand a chance. Sad but true. It's all about the hype, graphics and the image. It's not about the fun to these gamers.
It was worth it on launch day so you can imagine now ... Zelda, excite truck , wii sports and low price tag where pretty convincing ;)

I resently helped out in my sons 4th grade class. They were going on a field trip. The 4th grade boys were quite excited about videogames, they were goining on and on about God of War 3 and Halo 3.
There is your hardcore.
Muramasa is harder than God of War 3. Which option did you even play in Muramasa to claim it's easier?
I'm sure other people have mentioned some of these games already but there is no way I am reading this whole thread. the no more heroes games, Madworld, Call of duty Modern warfare and world at war, red steel 2, the Conduit is actually pretty decent, there are a bunch of games on Wii ware and Virtual console. the house of the dead games, okami, Zelda (you said he liked RPGs and those are both action adventure games that appeal to those types) Metroid Prime trilogy, and the ghost Busters game is pretty fun.
