I have an 80gb PS3 fat that was bundled with MGS4 and bought it just under two years ago. I have noticed that over the past couple of months my PS3 has been getting really loud; the fan is unbearable at times. At first I didn't pay too much attention to it but when I could hear it from a floor up, I started to get worried. I read online that keeping the PS3 vertical (I had it horizontal before) is a good way to fix it. When I keep it vertical, my PS3 is about 2.5 inches away from the top of the entertainment centre; is this enough distance? I also heard that keeping the PS3 elevated by placing two hollow tin cans underneath it stops the loud fan as well. Are any of these solutions correct? What should I try to fix this problem?

Wow, happens the same to me...sometimes watching blurays i think of throwing the remote to it...

Let the PS3 rest, is in overdrive. Clean the dust out to it traps heat which can constantly keep it hot inside(?)

mines so damn loud. i live in NJ and visited my friend in FL and his ps3 is so fuckin quiet lol. he does have a slim though and i have a 60gb. he also had AC cranking unlike me.

Vaccum it for dust, sounds like it's stuffed up. My PS3 literally gathers dust fast, in a month it's coated with it for some reason. Mines always vertical though to save space. I haven't had too many problems with the fan.

Hmm, mine doesn't make much noise other than creaking a while after I start it and after I turn it off (plastic heating and cooling no doubt). I have a slim though. What I have noticed is that the machine makes an awful lot of noise when playing older games with high hardware demands (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is the worst) so it seems that the Blu-ray drive is on the loud side.

The MGS4 PS3 is louder than most of the models. It is because it has so much damn meat inside. Also there is a vent on the MGS4 PS3 on the side so you do NOT want it vertical.

I want a Slim since I hardly ever use my B/C since I bought a new [S2 and I hardly ever use the media center.

When someone tells you that keeping your PS3 horizontal or vertical because of _____ they're wrong. They're telling you an old wives tale and just ignore them.

My old 80gig was incredibly loud but I stopped using it before anything bad happened.  I know it had problems, I have no idea if they were connected to it being loud.

Is it out of warranty? I think it is, so I would suggest to remove the case and give it a good blow out with co2 or a can of compressed air.

its the heat. its overheating and the fan is going on overdrive. let its rest. play in an airconditioned room.

its the damn weather, its so freaking hot.
