^ Not really, only if you count the last week of 2009.

In fairness, the "last week of 2009" had the first 3 days of 2010.  Including the holiday.

4 days > 3 days ;)

Plus all the shopping is done the days before the Holiday, not during.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

What are PS3 and Wii YTD sales in Japan?

For Media Create it's...

  1. DS: 810,248
  2. PSP: 785,199
  3. Wii: 600,748
  4. PS3: 543,284
  5. 360: 50,960
  6. PS2: 31,074

..and also worth keeping in mind the number of significant new title releases in that period (ie: 200k+ sellers)...

  1. PS3: 3 (RGG4/Hokuto Musou/BH5 AE)
  2. DS/PSP: 2 (DQVI/PokeRanger 3 and KH BBS/God Eater)
  3. Wii/360/PS2: 0

No, the shopping for new years generally comes on/after the 1st iirc, when kids have all their holiday cash to blow.  It's not a "gift-giving" holiday per se, like Christmas in America, the tradition is "Otoshidama" or giving money to kids.  Really, the 1st-3rd were probably bigger for sales than all of February or March for most platforms.

Just noticed, but Ys OiF kinda bombed. How is Falcom staying afloat on just PSP? These sales are even making Marvelous/Nippon Ichi look good. :/

Are you sure it's that way?

@jarrod: I've searched for it and it looks like it's that way. But there's possibly many people hading out gifts instead of money I would guess, but I don't know.

MC has the same range of numbers VGC has, Famitsu is the one considering 1 more week.

Very much so.  Look up "Otoshidama".

Golden Week is also generally fueled by kids being given money btw, but it's not near as big as New Year's.  I guess gifts might be given instead, but that likely as common as Americans giving their kids money instead of gifts for Christmas.  Sort of goes against the tradition.

And yeah, Famitsu aligns weeks differently and always includes new year's in the new year.  MC does it by 52 weeks only. Dunno about Denegeki?

huge PSP / DS hardware for next week in japan.. I expect sub 20k WII/PS3 hardware too
