Do we really need a Next Gen?

Yes! 84 58.74%

No! 59 41.26%

We will need new consoles by Christmas-2012 / early 2013 but not before then.

PS3 and 360 are still going strong sales wise but lets face it, they need more RAM, they need faster disk drives, 360 needs blu-ray support, PS3 needs a better OS, etc.

The question is do we need a next gen (at all).

Yes we dont need a next gen in 2 years but we need a next gen. Or someone wants really to play their PS3s WIIS and 360s for the next decades ?

I think all of you would hate the consoles after 20 years and probably stop gaming. All of you saying no right now in 5 years everybody would say: hell yeah

To me personally, yes. A new gen always brings new opportunities, possibilities, experiences, and attributes.

2012-2013 seems like the time when we may see new machines rolling in, and I'd be fine with that.

We most definitely do. The PS360 can barely pull off good stereoscopic 3D, and for that reason alone, I want a significant upgrade to hardware to allow for good 3D.
But as technology for the controllers improve (and that goes for all the motion controllers), we need a new standard for controls and not just a new and improved add-on for the consoles.

EDIT: I do hope this gen will last until 2012 at the least though.

Hmm, I'm conflicted. I wouldn't mind the PS3 and 360 getting slight upgrades (more RAM, better graphics card, processor, etc.), but I don't an entire overhaul is needed.

but if you do that you might as well release a nextgen console as everyone would need to buy a new console to get the improvements so all the existing owners would be annoyed and the developers wouldn't bother with it because only a small fraction of the userbase would have it. any change of the base components (RAM, CPU, GPU etc) would mean new games would have to be developed for it so you just get stuck with the old problems a pissed off userbase and make no difference to the majority of games.

A new order of parts would be a lot cheaper than developing an entirely new console from scratch. It'd take a whole lot less time as well.

Thinking from the standpoint that Nintendo's really the only one that can take the large hits from the R&D of a brand new console (if done right).

Well I know games will be $70-$80 next gen. $60 is already too much. I don't want next gen to come early.

Yes we do, relying simply on software will only take you so far, it is absolutely crucial for development that one pushes the hardware limits every now and then as well.
Should we also stop striving for more efficient car engines while we're at it? Or stop developing computer technology as a whole?
It won't stop, it never does and I'm glad.

ps2 was pushed past its limits? when that happens this gen then i will conseed my previous statements! when the developers start asking for new hardware then we will see it!

we won't see it in two yr's. maybe 5yr's. natal and move haft to have the same chance as all other add on's.

To be clear..

Take Nintendo DS and PSP for exampel. The DS has gone from being just the DS, to DSi and soon to 3DS. All is within "this gen". PSP has had 1000-3000, and even a "futuristic" DD only PSP Go. These are the types of upgrades i see for the Consoles this gen. But that isn't really "next gen".

1. Handhelds are different. Always have been. The same logic fails and fails hard when it has been applied to consoles in the past.

2. 3DS is the next handheld, it is not a part of the DS line.

Ultimately Sony and Microsoft need new hardware entirely if either side wants a chance at taking back the lion's share of the market. Natal is defintely only a forerunner, and not a product that Microsoft is trying to really succeed with. Natal is the Xbox, Natal's successor will be the 360. Both of them need new hardware and a new approach if they want to break out.

Nintendo has more obvious needs, but i think the pace of technology will match the three of them roughly. Holidays 2011 for Microsoft and Nintendo, early 2012 for Sony.
