Forums - Gaming Discussion - How long does each console have left on the market?

Hard to tell but I think that the succesors for each console will be released this way:

Wii - The current leader and probably very soon the best selling home console ever will had a succesor announced around 2013 for release the next year.

Xbox360 - It had done a good work BUT if Natal bombs that may hurt them so I guess that it will be released on 2013.

PS3 - The current loser needs to recover soon so I guess that by next year the PS4 will be announced and will be released on 2012.

all current gen consoles on sale till 2015, even if the releases are as light as the PS2's releases are now.

i think we'll hear the first news on The XBOX 360's successor The XBOX 24/7 at E3 this year launching on 12/21/12. I mean 2 confrences this year?

PS4 will be announced next year. Wii 2 will come out about the same time as the PS4, both in 2012.
Apple will release a console between 2011-13....all guesses......virtual reality, like the kind at David and Busters in the 90's will be the next big thing..

(edit)  also, i think Microsoft will release a handheld, so a four way race for consoles and handhelds.

my prediction:

new xbox -> 2013
new wii -> 2013
new ps -> 2014

2012 - Top 3 [so far]

                                                                             #1                                       #2                                      #3

PS3 will go the whole 10 year like cycle, but we will most likley see PS4 in 2012-2013, xbox most likley the same 2012-2013, Both Sony and MS are trying to keep this gen going because HD is more expensive to develop on, with PS move and Natal, It really would not surprise me if they waited til 2013-2014. I don't own a Wii and never will, but they may bring out that Wii 720, and step it up to HD here in the next year or two. I for one am very happy with what I am playing on, every new PS3 game I buy sets a new high, and I think we will see more and more from PS3 in the next few years, on the other hand I like my 360 but graphics wise its all been the same since Gears 2, so I don't think we will see any thing much better, which is fine 360 has a lot of great games that look good enough for me, its not always about the graphics, its just these games Sony is putting out with unreal graphics and gameplay to go along with it are just amazing. I have enjoyed this Gen and look forward to seeing what else they can do with these consoles, PS move will be great, can't wait.

i said it three times. If done right this gen could end in 2020.

lol no its really not in any way shape or form ever going to last that long, a large part of gaming has been the advancement in visuals and its been this way for decades.

if ps3 and 360 hold this hardware for even three more years it will be completely obsolete and they are presently already holding back what is possible, i play every type of genre from mmos to iphone games and one thing i absolutely love is when graphics, physics and size of gameplay is pushed further and further, current hardware in consoles is static and becoming a thorn in that area.

another thing is many of us specifically bought 1080p hdtv sets to view movies, shows and games in 1080p so far the only gaming platform that is using our 1080p sets to the fullest is the pc , so again consoles are behind in terms of tech, also wouldnt you like to play shooters or open world games in 60fps in native 1080p? i sure as hell would and im getting sick of lag and blurry textures and 30fps (or lower) and terrible draw distance, its kinda why ive been buying more pc games the games look and play so much better.

i say release them the sooner the better and maybe next gen they can finally have an upgradeable console

While I agree that there is realistically no chance that the current consoles will be around in 2020, I completely disagree with your reasoning. Generally speaking the more powerful consoles in a generation have performed far worse than their less powerful counterparts. Previously this has been explained away by claiming that strong third party support compensated for lack of processing power, but the success of the Wii (a less powerful system with much weaker third party support) demonstrates that processing power and third party support are not the main factors in driving sales that people think that they are.

What drives system adoption is new (and better) gaming experiences which can come from processing power, having the bulk of third party support, new user interfaces, or from a cultural shift making videogame a more social experience. While there have been great 4 player experiences since the N64, the Wii’s accessible controls took this to the next level because everyone (from your 3 year old nephew to your 85 year old grandmother) could play games together.

Although the improvement in processing power at an affordable price has been dramatic, I think the more important considerations to the next generation of consoles is how other technologies have developed to be at a quality and cost level where they could be incorporated into a gaming system. My assumption that the next generation console from Nintendo will blur the lines between digital and physical space has me looking at a lot of technologies, and digital cameras, projectors (including small LCD projectors and mono/two-tone laser systems), and focused sound systems are all becoming very affordable.

The problem all current consoles face is that it is difficult (nearly impossible) to change the social-meaning of a console mid cycle; so even if they have all the processing power they need, it is unlikely that they could produce the gameplay enhancement they need to maintain relevance if it requires add-ons or is conceptually different from what they have already produced.

not once anywhere did i mention anything about sales im talking about the software and hardware , i dont care about the wii and its 70 million conosles sold 90% of the games on that platform suck (imo of course) and if you add the ps3, 360, pc and gaming accesories (video cards, ram ,cpu) u have a much much larger audience dedicated to pushing games forward and wanting more of what makes hardcore games so great, do you not think most wii owners want the same visuals that their competitors are producing ??

i understand its not just about graphics of course not, but visual fidelity , physics , sound and size are all very important parts of creating believeable worlds and characters.  just look how far we have come since something like pong its amazing how in 20 some years we are creating such realism with pixels and its definitely not stopping this gen.

right now the pc can produce much higher fps than 60 and display it in 1080p or higher , we all know that the pc has always been the visual benchmark that the hardcore consoles keep trying to catch up to, its not going to be any different next gen except for things like motion controls, cameras and different interfaces but the hardcore audience will always want to see how far we can push the harware and the hardcore audience still dominates the market and always will , we game everyday and its really part of out life the casuals will be happy with a wii until it breaks, then they will probably just buy another one.

soooo many people not actually using basic logic and level headed thought in regards to Wii's life.

Seriously, YES ITS HARDWARE IS INFERIOR TO PS360, we get it, we know.

But that doesn't negate the fact that it is ALWAYS at the top of the charts with a pretty good to significant margin. It has FAR more demand than the PS360 at launch, steadily until now, and for the foreseeable future.

The next gen will start in 2012 regardless of the new motion controls for PS360 launching in 2010. In 2012 their machines will be more ingrained with motion devices, maybe not exactly like Natal/Move, but it will contain motion.

PS360 will stop being available less than one year after their successors release in 2012.

Wii will continue to sell at $149-$99 price points worldwide until 2015. It will be minimal sales like the PS2 is now, but it will continue to be produced.
