Ouch that is pretty bad, worse than Baten Kaitos lol
Poor guys, I commend them for trying though. I would imagine there would be a little backlash if there was no English subs.

Not really.  The few games that have come out that had Japanese voices only, hardly anyone even cared.  And those games were about the same level of priority as this game.  As in, they weren't expected to sell much or at all outside of Japan.

The people who whine about how they can only stand English voices are about the same or perhaps less than those who complain about wanting Japanese voices.  The difference is, when you have a dub that's this bad, and its the only option, you start to see why people are requesting for a second audio track option with the original Japanese voices.

Especially since they probably spent all of a week and very little money making this dub.

True, I have heard much better game dubs than this.  Nonetheless, as bad as the localization is, I really can't think of any other reason to skip this title.  It's the first genuine RPG for Wii, and a pretty good one at that (according to the reviews in Japan)  That and to me, voice work is not a major reason to purchase a game:  the content and entertainment value is.  And I'm sure they'll have an option to mute the voices (don't they have something like that in the Japanese version)?

But that's the point.  When you have a game such as this, which features voices as an option, you shouldn't have to turn the voices off.  It should just come with an option for the original voices.

Its a stark contrast to an example such as Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2, which the original game didn't have voices and they ADDED voices to the western release.  And some of the voices in that game were pretty bad as well.  Yet people were willing to put up with those voices just because they thought Yangus and Jessica were good.  Yet now people are complaining about the voices in this game are bad and are willing to buy a game and turn the voices off?  Where's the threshold for 'bad voices'?  Where does the general public decide to turn the voices off....or decide to not buy a game based on the voices.

That's the point I was trying to bring up.  These game developers who are churning out lackluster and cheesy dubs are at a point now where they pretty much need to start putting the original voices on the games.  Because its going to start effecting their sales, if it hasn't already.  I already know plenty of people who skipped over major JRPG titles because of the bad voices; such as Star Ocean 4, Tales of Symphonia/Vesperia and even Final Fantasy XIII.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

The Symphonia]dubs were actually quite good; I had no major problems with it.  That said, I AM getting this either way, whether I like the voices or not.

i can deal with those voices, as long as the gameplay is good and has a ton of stuff for me to do, then its all good in my book.

I have high tolerance for VA so I'll survive. I just want the damn game in Europe.

Wow... just wow. *puts down his mug of milk before letting out a defeated sigh*

Ya know... it wasn't easy playing through Tales of Vesperia 5 times so I could complete everything in that game. I mean with the exception of Duke I really couldn't stand hearing the voices... but what I wouldn't give for those same voices, or something even marginally better than what I just heard in those videos. I don't know how to say this, but that was quite literally one of the most ear churning five minuets of my entire life.
Fortunately those dreadful voices are not enough to prevent me from buying the game, because when you live in the UK like me, you can't really be too picky about what JRPG's you want to play.

How technical is your game?

I'm pretty confident the game itself is good (Didn't it score 8s in Famitsu?) and that it will still be worthwhile.  Needless to say, it's too bad its localization job isn't on the same level as Symphonia games, or even more underrated dubs like Crystal Bearers and Fragile Dreams.  Flawed as those two games are, I found the voice work in both to be above-average to exellent.  (I actually liked playing both; I'm currently working on Fragile, and I have to say I'm liking it immensely.)

Anyway, for those still unsure, I found an "impressions" article of this game from way back when (last year).  They said it was the best JRPG available on the Wii.  http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=4297

Me too. Although I do agree those seem like placeholder voices considering the horrible synch.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

Why is everyone saying Tales of Vesperia has bad VA?
I find the VA in ToV great, maybe even best of any JRPG.

New video from GameSpot: http://www.gamespot.com/wii/rpg/arclightfantasy/video/6262369?tag=gumballs%3Bsubtitle%3B3

There is also another new video from IGN but you have to fast foward to get it to work.

And yeah...It doesn't look like the voices are placeholders... At least the gameplay looks solid. Reminds me of Skies of Arcadia.
