Saving the trees... yeah right.. more like it saves them making the manual whilst charging the same price. If you do go ahead UBI-SOFT I'll expect a deduction in the price of the game, seeing that you are saving money by not producing any paperback manuals.
It's funny seeing how many gamers are resistance to progress..
paper books are doomed....
IMO, most gamers don't bother reading the game manuals, although there is still a significant percentage of gamers who do, even if it's just while reading them on the can.
In-game manual/tutorials are pretty standard as is with the print manual largely serving as a hard copy to reference while playing. Typically while the game is paused, which is also when the in-game manual is available.
Also consider there is no "standard" for game manuals. Some of them are flat out useless, while some probably appeal to the collector of "stuff" if they have pretty layouts and artwork in addition to useful information.
It's just one more step to eliminating physical distribution of information based goods IMO.

Collecting books can be pretty inconvenient past a certain point. Even worse than digital media like CDs, DVDs, etc.
I've imagined a future for quite some time where all those books would be available in digital format once the ability to access them became ubiquitous (beyond e-book readers, etc.) although there is still something to be said about having a physical book to reference by thumb, or high quality plates that don't have to be zoomed in upon to see the detail (art books, visual reference books and the like).
But as far as novels go...
Bookstores are already feeling the pinch. Face it; physical book inventory is not the most efficient means of getting the product to consumers. Borders is on the verge of bankruptcy and will likely be absorbed if they don't find a way to adjust their business model fast (much like Blockbuster with movie rentals).
Who knows? If e-book technology becomes cheap and common enough, traditional books may be on their way out as the primary means of distribution in less than ten years.

Okay, so the pslinter cell conviction, new game example, Prima strategy guid is 256 pages.....on average, id say, a video game MANUAL is 15 pages? Okay, so the strategy guide is $20 so if we divide the actual page numbers its about 1/17th of the size page wise. Now, let us take into account other variables. Size of paper, and ink to print. So if its 1/17th in base page numbers and the manuals are about 1/4th the size of the paper with far less ink and usually not colored....can we agree on 10 cents for a paper manual?
Okay, now give me an account i can deposit $1.00 into so it will cover youre whining for the next 10 Ubisoft games in which you still get a manual, just with less environmental destruction. Sound good? Great. Thanks for playing.
This is entirely for cost cutting reasons, but I welcome it
