I would add Van Vogt, Vance (the worlds this guy build, it's unbelievable) in the short list of the "greatest".

I do love the first books of Eddings (even if i don't classify him as a "greatest")

the Metal Gear Solid series as the best story by far.

Final Fantasy's usually have rather impressive stories as well, however not as consistent as MGS. FFVI, FFVII and FFX were very good stroies, FFXII was alright but some of the characters just seem pointless to the story and FFXIII has a not bad not good story really, nothing much to say about it.

the Onimusha series as a very good story, although it is slightly historical and apart from Dawn of Dreams, the first 3 are the good ones.
