Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is the gta series growing old

GTAIV wasn't bad dude. It sure didn't deserve all the 10/10's but it was a good game.

They just need to forget about trying to make it somewhat realistic and go back to what was fun like in GTA3/Vice City/San Andreas.

Dont think GTA IV was a 'disaster' or a 'travesty'. First GTA I ever played and I thought it was brilliant although I admit I cant compare it the previous games.
Also I dont understand how a game that has sold 7+ million on the 360 and 6+ million on the PS3 can be on its last legs

it sold that much before people knew what a downgrade it was. GTA:SA sold more on the ps2 then GTA4 did on the ps3/360 combined. So gta4's sales actually declined compared to the previous installment. That's a sign of the series getting old. lol

Im aware that GTA IVs sales are much smaller than previous games in the series, but they are still very high and the game is in the top 5 in terms of sales for both the 360 and the PS3. And although many people might have a negative view of the game, they will probably amount to a fraction of the combined 13 million sales figure, with the vast majority of GTA IV players likely willing to buy GTA V if/when it comes. Thats why the series isnt on its last legs, and wont be until be until its numbers are significantly smaller (see Guitar hero series sales)

Rockstar just completely lost why people loved GTA (particularly SA) for how ridiculously over the top it was and all the stuff you could do. I think they've figured this out as shown by Gay Tony.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

just cause is the next gta , if they can fix the bugs and the few glitches

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

People in general don't like change and are prepered to play, watch and listen to the same old shit no matter how many times it is repackaged and resold to them.

Therefore GTA will continue.

This is the kind of pretentious garbage that hurts the forum.

On topic:

You're assuming that everyone was disappointed with GTA4, and that it was some kind of huge disaster. I disagree completely. I had a very fun time with the game, and I went in with high expectations. Was it as good as the reviews said? No, no game would be. I didn't think Ocarina of Time lived up to the reviews, nor Super Mario Galaxy. 10/10 scores across the board are never very representative of a game's quality.

And you're also assuming that Rockstar has done everything they can with GTA. I apologize if you weren't actually making assumptions, but whatever. There are plenty of things left to do in GTA. That's the great thing about open world, sandbox titles: there's always the opportunity for more features and more fun things to do. Calling GTA4 a "disaster" is just silly.

Red Dead Redemption, even if it has a similar style, is hardly a replacement for GTA. The Grand Theft Auto franchise is massive. It's among the top ten selling videogame franchises EVER, and it did that it only 2 generations. Plus, GTA4 (combined) sold more than Vice City. That's pretty impressive given the much lower userbases of the PS3 and 360 combined.

They did a GTA SA HD remake this gen? I guess they did do everything.

not a bad game but it ain't anything special, it ain't anyhthing compared to other xbox games.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

I don't think GTA is becoming less popular and I am one of those few people who absolutely loved GTAIV and am playing the episodes as we speak. The only thing that really bugged me about the game is the fact that you can do nothing with the money earned after beating the game. Just buy clothes I guess.

I knew R* were going to tone down GTA at the beginning of this gen bec if you look at the trend GTA has been following. The first title begins slow then the next installment adds more stuff and upgrades and finally they go out with a bang (that's what happened with III, vice city and then SA)

I think the next GTA is going to keep all the improvements made to GTAIV but add all the wacky stuff and that fun factor as well. Like airplanes, real tanks, big areas and so on.

With the disapointment that was gta4,I was wondering if the gta series is on it's last legs. Rockstar's already done everything possible in a gta game. Rockstar is coming out with red dead redemption, which is just gta in the old west. So what else could they do in a gta game? How is rockstar going to follow up on that disaster of a game that was gta4?

Yeah, Disaster of a game, that is what all these 100 mean.
You should have started your post with that so everyone could stop reading and facepalm.

I could go on and on about why Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best games we've ever seen and why even folks who are easily offended should play it, but that would be pointless. The only thing you need to know is that you have to play this game. Period.

Expectations were so high for Grand Theft Auto IV that one of the biggest surprises is that it's managed to meet them. That it's also gone on to confound these is truly a marvel, and the game's Liberty City is nothing less than one of the greatest videogame worlds yet conceived.

None of these little flaws take away from Liberty City's breathtaking vistas, incredibly varied scenery, and lived-in look (the PS3 version has the slightest visual edge, plus motion-control support -- but then it's missing Achievements and the eventual downloadable episodes exclusive to the 360 game). The city just feels alive.

Almost everything you do in Liberty City would be good enough to drive its own game, and the best parts would be good enough to outrun the competition, but the reason it works so well is that Rockstar has made a game that requires no patience to play. This, as much as its usual coherency and the best script in the series, is what makes GTA IV the best openworld game yet, and why it will take something miraculous to rob it of game of the year status.

It's amazing that a sequel that keeps the core gameplay concepts of its prior incarnations can do so much to change itself into something new. Cabs are awesome, as is the cellphones capabilities. But perhaps the biggest innovation is the notion that you can create a game that's as valid a piece of art as any book or movie. Is this our "Citizen Kane" moment?

Considering the fact that it's been a target of political and media pundits who keep harping on the infamous "Hot Coffee" incident, it's understandable to think that Rockstar might tone down the adult themes in GTA IV. Maybe it's the fact that Sony was once on top of the mountain in this industry, and the fall from grace has been swift and brutal. The worst thing about being on top is the fall to the bottom, and maybe the transition from PS2 dominance to PS3 heel-dragging has had a damaging effect on the fanboy psyche, leaving them vulnerable and insecure. Maybe fanboys are suffering from a severe case of paranoid delusion, brought about by denial that the PS3 is in third place when once Sony was leading the charge.
