Forums - Sony Discussion - What did the PS3 do that the Wii and/or XBox 360 copied?

Please tell me you’re trolling… PLEASE!

Rol only does sarcasm

XxXProphecyXxX  “How about installing games to HDD?”

Problem is you have to install on the PS3 for most games because of that lovely 2x blur-ray drive people love so much.

Not true

CGI-Quality  “PS3 was the first HDMI-ready console. After its launch, the 360 added the function.”

You might be the only right answer I’ve seen in this entire thread… Congrats for what it’s worth.

Severance  “don't know about you but it actually looks more like the dualshock than the 360's controller”

.You’re kidding right, the wii controller (forget the right name for it) is a SNES controller with grips… the end.

realill  “PS3 is a first console with Internet Browser and Wii is second.”

O.o; silly kid you ever own a dreamcast? You know the best console ever made with web browser and the first console to support more than dial-up.

cura  “Neither MS or Nintendo made slim versions of their last gen consoles (i.e., xbox and GameCube respectively) whereas Sony did (i.e., ps2). If MS did it this gen, they'd quite clearly be taking a page out of Sony's book.“

You know Nintendo has a Slim model of the NES, and SNES right???? Yes Sony did it with both the PS1 and PS2. Sega never was good at slimming down there beasts… they just keep adding more junk on top of them. Kind of sad.

NicholasCage  “PS2 Eye Toy = Motion Controls this generation.”

Sorry cage wrong again it was called the Power Glove.

phinch1   “Sony was first to add the "Home" button on the controller”

I think Microsoft call it a Guide Button but nice try… swing and a miss.

Does it really matter, they have copied a lot from Sony in the past gen, like the 2nd set of shoulder buttons on the 360, moving the white and black buttons. The new dashboard is also kind of like an XMB, but at right angles... Avatars are also copies of Home in some way, or maybe copies of Miis, I am not really sure, but I don't really care either

So? doesn't change the fact that Microsoft followed with the idea to install games in your consoles HDD.

Ok I got to like page 3 and i can't read anymore till I say this much. If this has been pointed out then I'm going to just remind evryone.

Sony's slim model has been done before. NES top loader comes to mind.

Sony Duel Shock. The only thing that controler did was add 2 sticks. And that was a great thing i admit. But the damn thing was just a SNES controler really.

Sony first web browser? lolz. Dream cast is only 10 years old. How can people's memories be so short?

I will tell you this. I'm one of the only people that I know that enjoy HOME. Kudos Sony.

Oh Motion controls? 6-axis? Who cares. Does anyone remember the power glove. "It's so bad". And if its about good motion controls then the 6-axis can't be counted anyways.

First disk based system? Um Sega CD? The Saturn? When did the CDi come out? Oh and the NEOGEO had one i think, maybe the TG16 had a $400 CD addon as well.

BTW I love my PS3. I don't really mind that they steal ideas and are not very original as long as they do great things with them.

I am seeing the Wii getting a controller add on for the Wiimote that looks like the 360.  Outside of that, what else?  Can someone fill me in here?

don't know about you but it actually looks more like the dualshock than the 360's controller.

other than that, i can add some stuff that i rather call inspiration than a "Rip off!" to this thread but i choose not to because there are some people who will take it deeply and personally.

Correlation does not imply causation. The reason the classic controller looks like the dual shock is because they are both SNES pads with analogue sticks added on in the only place you could add them

Edit - stupid typo *brews more coffee*

it's not like nintendo was first either by your definition nintendo COPIED ATARI and therefore they have never innovated.

It's funny (no pun here... I know everyone sounds angry on forums ) that most people think the Wii Classic Controller is a copy of the Dual Shock.

It's true the very first Playstation controller was pretty much a SNES controller with two "grips" or wahtever you call that. Anyone remember that one? It didn't feature control sticks hehe

But I don't think Nintendo copied Atari. I mean the SNES controller is pretty much a NES controller with some additional buttons. At the time Nintendo released the NES Atari still used Joysticks, didn't they? (I never played Atari but I remember my neighbour saying the NES controller looked crazy because of the D-Pad)

And what is the definition of "copying" to most people here? Can you really "copy" a disc drive or a HDD? These were just the next logical steps. But you can copy the Wii remote (because it was so radically different than any controller before) or the NES controller (same here) because they really changed how the game was played. Literally You can't "copy" / "steal" technology technology that was pretty obvious to be used (in a sense of "if you use a HDD you copied me!") but you can copy the use of technology. So if there's something Nintendo really copied it would be the use of two analog sticks on a single controller. But Nintendo surely didn't copy "motion control" (= Eyetoy) because the Wii Remote is a completely different concept.

So basically if there is something the whole industry is looking forward to (3D graphics, HDD's, HD graphics, Blu-Ray) I wouldn't say you really "innovated" by using this and when someone else uses it, too he didn't really copy you.

But when you introduce something that really changes how the game is played, something that is different enough to be considered a radical change and then suddenly someone else follows you (like introducing a motion controller after using a completely different concept of a controller before) then he pretty much copied, yeah. This isn't "evil" or bad or something. If you happen to copy an idea and improve it drastically (like the Dual Shock did with its two analog sticks) you can still be proud of it.

But hey it's not like people would stop arguing hehe

LOL!!! cant w8 either, gonna be entertaining for sure.

360 copied wireless controllers.
360 copied HDMI port.
360 attempted to copy Bluray with HD DVD - FAIL
360 copied with the larger HDD

Then again the industry evolves around copying and improving.

I play PC and PS3. The best of both worlds.

Wait didn't 360 release the official wireless pads in 2005? Considering PS3 came out in 2007 that's hardly copying, I am not sure whether there were wireless controllers prior, but there probably were, I never had PS2 so I have no clue.

Elite was the first 120GB console, PS3 only came in 120GB when Slim was released last year, prior that the biggest drive was 80GB. Sony on the other hand had copied the hard drive concept altogether, the original Xbox had an integrated hard drive and you didn't need a memory card to store saves and info etc.

Of course without all the duplication and slightly improvements the video games industry would be stale, the most innovative are the ones that lead the sales, other big companys copy the biggest to attract bigger prospect of sales
