Forums - General Discussion - Left Wing Activist NOMINEE for Supreme Court

Well according to the 'NO' party, Goodwin Liu is a left wing activist, who wrote openly about the need for the constitution to change accordingly with the change in society. He was never judge and  hes a associate dean of berkley's law school.

Obama's decisions so far should make right wing supporters burn like hell inside.

Do you think the gop'ers will use the filibuster tactic to block this nomination.

Considering the stuff Lie has said... they'll probably try.

“Judge Alito’s record envisions an America where police may shoot and kill an unarmed boy to stop him from running away with a stolen purse … where a black man may be sentenced to death by an all-white jury for killing a white man,”

Sounds more like a random forum poster than a supreme court judge.  His arguement is he'd be different as a judge because being a judge is differnet from being a professor.

To me... Supreme Court Justice isn't exactly a good "starter job" ofr a career.  I want people who have been judges to selected.

People who've been Federal judges for that matter.

Welcome to the new America, where the job of interpreting the constitution requires taking into account everything we have "learned" over the last 200 years.

Problem is, what we really are doing, is applying everything he have forgot over the last 200 years.

People are the same as they have been for 10's of thousands of years. We wrote that document just a few hundred years ago, to protect ourselves from people who think like this.

This mindset, is what's going to make this country fail. Not the other way around.

Y'know I think I'm going to check out some moderate media on this guy (ie. BBC). This forum is too rabidly anti-Obama for me to take things at face value to be honest.

I love how he said his personal beliefs would not effect how he rules on cases, yet in the video I linked above, he says it should be an important part of being a judge.

The guy needs to not be a judge at this level. It's kind of crazy to think otherwise, regardless of your political point of view (unless tearing down the US is your political point of view).

Ah, actually he's applying to be an Appellate judge. That's in some ways even worse. Really Appellate judges are supposed to be the more conservative judges.

Either way, really you'd prefer people move up the ranks of judge rather then just be given important judge jobs.

And just to make a point about the US vs Them mindset, and think that's all this is...

Obama will appoint well over 100 judges in his time. If this was just the Republicans trying to be the "no" party, you would have seen this level of questioning on all of them, and you haven't.

This has everything to do with who this guy is, and not what party or man appointed him.

Its sad that we actually need a liberal judge to offset the conservative judges in the supreme court. Judges should rule by their honest interpretation of the law, not on what they believe personally, politically, or religiously.

I agree. But people are people. If Obama hires a judge that happens to be a very liberal person who just "sees" things differently, that's ok.

That's not this guy. This guy thinks the Constitution should not mean the same thing today that it meant 200 years ago. That it's an outdated document that really holds no barring on where we should be going as a country.

That's a completely different thing.

I find it strange that this guy was never on any list of 'good judges that Obama should nominate'

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
