What would the situation look like if everyone launched at the same time?

If Xbox didn't already have tons of games and an established userbase, would it be doing just as well now (provided that it didn't have shortages)

Wii would probably be leading by about 2-3 million over both Sony and MS

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

... X would be dead, theres a reason they rushed their launch.

They didn't "rush" their launch. They decided that they had no shot at going toe to toe against the Wii and PS3 at the same time, so they did it a year early, and it payed off pretty well.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I don't think it would have impacted sales of any of the systems if Microsoft hadn't launched earlier, but where the impact would have been felt is Microsoft would not have such a lead in the US, which is critical in its ability to lure exclusives from Sony.

I think the xbox 360 would suffer the most if all three consoles were out at the same time. I don't believe that the wii would have suffered at all. The PS3 would have done much better if it was released sooner.

Yeah, it'd be the 360 suffering. Microsoft knew they couldn't go head-to-head with the PS3, they needed some sort of advantage. Its starting to look like those 12 months were exactly the advantage they needed (plus a huge price advantage). They'll maintain their sales lead in America for the whole generation, and possibly cover the Japanese difference, too. (PS3 could sell 80-90K a month in Japan this year, even as 360 outsells PS3 by at least 100K all year. Europe is the big question mark.)

Wii would have sold bonkers no matter the competition, and PS3 would have launched huge and stalled no matter. But it would have been hard for 360 to have the worst launch and get away with it if they all launched together.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

i don't know. Would the 360 be selling worse, month-to-month, as it is now? Also don't forget that 400 is still a lot less than 600, so there would still be a price advantage.

I'd think that the 360 numbers would probably be comparable with PS3-- around ~3 million, except with more market share in NA than in Japan.

The Wii, on the other hand, would probably be the clear winner with 6+ million systems sold

In terms of price, Microsoft with its year headstart has more room to move, as they've had an extra year to reduce costs. Not that we're seeing any indication of this theory.
