Link can block explosions with his shield in some games, yeah. "Suicide bombing and living" is actually possible with the bomb mask if you keep your shield up in Majora's Mask. What about it?

Why would we cut out all the magic stuff? If we cut out all the magic stuff, then Kratos is just a normal, non-Herculean guy, like in that scene at the end of Chains of Olympus.
