Forums - Gaming Discussion - It's On: Apple Calls Out Sony and Nintendo Directly

The question is if people start buying iPhones for gaming specifically, which hasn't happened in significant numbers yet. Game Center might help, or not, but we shall see.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I think the fact that they released number of games rather then revenue says something.  I'm curious to see how much is spent on Iphone games vs DS and/or PSP games.

Well first off, you have to consider that they most likely included the free or "lite" versions of apps in that count as well. Then you have to consider there are many duplicates of games, I mean punch in solitaire in the search, see how many results you get. Do the same with all the other simple board games out there.

If you compare actual full-fledged quality games, Apple doesn't come near the DS and PSP. They just fudged their numbers to make it look like they have more.

Well noone will be choosing to get a ds OR an iphone for gaming. Standard nintendo games are like 30 quid. They have a decent budget to them. Iphones standard price is like 3 quid. No budget. Games less fleshed out than a gba game. As you said ones a mobile market, the other is a gaming handheld market. Why bother wih this, there is no competition between em.

I'm a huge supporter of the app store when it comes to gaming and I couldn't even imagine going back and being limited to my PSP or DS game selection. Of course the PSP/DS have plenty of good games, but my ipod lets me play Japanese visual novels (particularly horror), many adventure games, pilot wing style games, obscure platformers and 16bit style isometric adventure games.

Glyder 1/2
Kowai-Hanashi vol 1-9
Mystique
Zenonia 1/2

I'm in heaven!!

I could make good lists for all my handhelds and I do love them all, so it just annoys me when people write off the ipod/pad as a gaming device even with all the good games it has.

How silly.

Quality >>>>> Quantity

the iphone may be better than the PSP but it can only have dreams about being in the same world as the DS, let alone compete with it!!

PSP hater alert.. just because you didn't buy any PSP games, doesn't mean it doesn't have good games..

Opinion hater alert.

how can you form an opinion if you bougth absolutely no games for the PSP..

Kimi wa ne tashika ni ano toki watashi no soba ni ita

I will never leave you

When people realize that in a few years there will be 300+ millions people walking around with a smartphone capable of running games as powerfull as those running on the DS or the PSP they will realize how dangerous Apple and other smartphones can be.

Issue isn't wether the DS and the PSP are better or not, fact is a decent percentage of the population will have a smartphone, even without the gaming capacities...

Then the question becomes :
- why should I carry 2-3 electronics devices in my pockets or bag when 1 can do it all
- why should I spend 200$ on a new portable when my phone can do it..

So stop thinking in terms of your gamer mindsets, and starts thinking like the casual out there because suddenly with smart phones you're not looking at a 100 million possible customers base but one that is possibly going to be 3x or 4x bigger in a few years...

And that is more than the DS or PSP can ever reach....

As for the quality criteria, Carnival games  and Farmville say hello....

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Just a thought, but I'd like to see how many of those apps are "Games" and how many are "Entertainment Titles" as Apple puts it. Would be interesting to see. *shrugs*
